Day 1: Arrival and Kigali City Tour

Upon arrival at Kigali International Airport, you will meet our driver guide. He or she will brief you about the 9 days Congo Nile Trail and Nyungwe Safari. Later on, you will transfer to Kigali and do a city tour. In this tour, you will visit local markets and museums and explore the city at large. In the evening, check in to your hotel for dinner and overnight.

Day 2: Transfer from Kigali to Rubavu

After your breakfast, you will transfer to Rubavu. The town is near Lake Kivu. Upon arrival, explore different sites and meet the locals if you must. You will dine at a lodge and spend the night over.

Day 3: Transfer to Gisenyi to Rwinyoni (Kimbiri)

Wake up to a nice breakfast and proceed with the transfer to the beginning point of the Congo Nile Trail. You will first attend an orientation led by an experienced ranger guide. Later on, you will start with the walk. It will take you to the northwest side of Lake Kivu. This part of the Congo Nile Trail offers amazing views of Lake Kivu. You will continue with the walk up to Kimbiri. Here, you explore the surrounding villages around the trail.

Day 4: Transfer to Kinunu

Today, you will wake up early and engage have breakfast. Proceed with a two-hour walk to the fishing village of Nkora. In this area, you will encounter several fishermen. Proceed to the banana and coffee plantations. In Kinunu, you will encounter a coffee-washing station. Learn about the stories related to the area as you proceed with the 9 days Congo Nile Trail and Nyungwe Safari.

Day 5: Transfer to Congo Nile via Musasa

The day will start with breakfast as always. Then, you will proceed with a tour along Lake Kivu. You will visit the local communities. More so, you will enjoy views of the surrounding banana plantations. You will visit the well-known Kinunu Church.

Day 6: Transfer to Rubengera Junction

Day 7: Boat Cruise on Lake Kivu and Transfer to Nyungwe Forest National Park

Day 7 will start with breakfast and a transfer from Kibuye to Lake Kivu. Upon arrival, you will take a boat cruise. Here, you will see many islands. Later on, you will drive to Nyungwe Forest National Park. Upon arrival, check in to a lodge for dinner and overnight.

Day 8: Chimpanzee Trekking and Canopy Walk

After your early breakfast, you will transfer to the park headquarters for a briefing on chimpanzee trekking. You will know the dos and don’ts of chimpanzee trekking. Then, you will continue with the activity as you walk in the forests. Chimpanzee trekking takes about 2 to 7 hours of the day including the one hour spent with chimps. After tracking the chimpanzees, you will engage in the canopy walk on a suspended bridge. This is a perfect spot for seeing many birds and primates. Later, you will transfer to a lodge for dinner and overnight.

Day 9: Transfer to Kigali

Day 1: Pick up and transfer to a hotel in Kigali

On arrival at Kigali International Airport, you will be picked up and transferred to the hotel within Kigali. While at the hotel in Kigali, you will be left to rest. In the afternoon, you will go ahead with a city tour in Kigali where you will visit the Kigali genocide museum, the Presidents Museum, the Belgium Monument, and many others.

Day 2: Game drive and boat cruise in Akagera National Park

You will start the day with the morning breakfast and then go ahead with the transfer to the Akagera National Park in the east of Rwanda. The transfer will take about 2 to 3 hours of the day. Upon arriving in the park, you will start with a game drive. Later on, go ahead with an afternoon boat on Lake Ihema. This activity allows you to see wildlife like hippos, elephants, crocodiles, and many others.

Day 3: Transfer to the Nyungwe Forest National Park

You will start your day with the chimpanzee trekking in the park which will last for about 2 to 6 hours of the day. You will have one hour to view them. Upon arriving in the town, you will check into the lodge.

Day 5: Lowland gorilla trekking and visit the waterfalls  

On day 5 of the 20 days of Uganda, Rwanda, and Congo safaris, you will start with the morning breakfast and then you will proceed with the transfer to the Kahuzi Biega National Park. The transfer will take about 45 minutes and upon arrival, you will start with the briefing about the lowland gorilla trekking. The activity will last for about 2 to 7 hours of the day upon where you will meet the gorillas. Then you have one hour to view the gorillas in their natural habitat.  Have lunch and then visit the waterfalls. Dinner and overnight will be at your lodge in Bukavu.

Day 6: Transfer to Rubavu on Lake Kivu

While in Bukavu, you will start the day with breakfast and then you will transfer to Rubavu. As you arrive back in Rwanda via the Cyangungu border, you will start with the check in the migration offices. Then you will take about 4 to 5 hours to reach Rubavu on Lake Kivu. You will arrive at lunchtime and then you will be left to enjoy the beach life on Lake Kivu.

Day 7: Morning boat cruise and transfer to Volcanoes National Park (Bat Caves Tour)

You will start over with a morning breakfast and then go ahead with the transfer to the Volcanoes National Park. The transfer will take about 2 hours of the day. As you arrive in the park you will be left to rest and then in the afternoon, you will start over with the visit to the gorilla guardian village. The visit to this community will engage you in the culture of Rwanda. You will encounter the former poachers of the park. While in the village, travelers will engage in cultural dances, local cuisine preparation, storytelling, and many others.

Day 8: Golden monkey trekking and transfer to Mgahinga Gorilla National Park

Golden monkey trekking in the park will start with a briefing about the activity. It will take you to the forests of the volcanoes in search of these primates. The activity will last for about 2 to 5 hours of the day. Later on, you will go ahead with the transfer to the Mgahinga Gorilla National Park through the Cyanika border in Kisoro. As you arrive at the border, you will check into the migration office. You will proceed with the transfer to the Mgahinga Gorilla National Park.

Day 9: Hiking Mountain Sabyinyo and transfer to Bwindi Impenetrable National Park

You wake up early in the morning and go ahead with the transfer to Mgahinga Gorilla National Park headquarters to check in for the hiking of the Mountain Sabyinyo. You will start the hike and you will be accompanied by the ranger guide. The hike to this volcano is so challenging and it requires one to be fit enough. Then after the hike which will take about 8 hours of the day, you will be transferred to Bwindi Impenetrable National Park.

Day 10: Gorilla trekking and Batwa Community Tour

While in the Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, you will be transferred to the park headquarters after your breakfast. The activity will last about 2 to 7 hours of the day.  Later on, you will visit the Batwa community for the Batwa cultural experience. While in the community, you will start with the cultural dances, storytelling, and many others.

Day 11: Transfer to Queen Elizabeth National Park (En-route game drive in Ishasha)

After your early morning breakfast, you will start over with the transfer to the Queen Elizabeth National Park. The transfer will take about 2 hours of the day to reach the park. You will arrive in the southern sector of the park and you will start over with the game drive various wildlife like the tree-climbing lions will be seen and other wildlife like leopards, elephants, buffaloes, and many others. Then you will proceed to your lodge for dinner and overnight.

Day 12: chimpanzee trekking and boat cruise in the Kazinga Channel

Today, you will start over with the transfer to the Kyambura Gorge for the chimpanzee trekking. The activity will last for about 3 to 5 hours upon where you meet the chimpanzee. You will be transferred to the Kazinga channel for a boat cruise in the afternoon. During the boat cruise at the Kazinga Channel, you will see different wildlife at the banks of the lake like hippos, crocodiles, buffaloes, and many others.

Day 13: Game drive and transfer to the Kibale National Park

While in the Queen Elizabeth National Park, you will start over with the game drive in the Kasenyi plains, the northern part of the park. Later on, you will transfer to the Kibale National Park, which will take about 2 hours of travel to reach the park. As you arrive, you will check into the lodge for dinner and overnight.

Day 15: Chimpanzee tracking and Bigodi wetland tour

While in the Kibale National Park, you will start over with the transfer back to the park headquarters for the briefing about the chimpanzee trekking. The duration for the activity is about 2 to 7 hours of the day upon where you will meet the chimpanzee. Later on, you will proceed with the Bigodi wetland tour and you will encounter different wildlife like birds and small primates. Then you will continue with the community tour where you will engage in coffee roasting banana brewing and many other activities.

Day 16: Transfer to Lake Mburo National Park

Detailed Itinerary

Day 1: Transfer to Nyungwe National Park and Afternoon Canopy Walk

You will meet our driver guide upon arriving at the Kigali International Airport. You will have breakfast first if you spent the previous night in Kigali city. He or she will brief you about the 12 Days Rwanda Congo & Uganda Tour. You will do a short Kigali City tour and visit the Kimironko market and Genocide Memorial Sites. Later on, you will transfer to Nyungwe National Park. Lunch will be along the way. Upon arrival, you will go for a canopy walk on top of the forest. Enjoy scenic views of the forest, birds, and the surrounding areas. The park is home to diverse species of primates and plants. In the evening, check in to your lodge for dinner and overnight.

Day 2: Chimpanzee trekking and crossing to Bukavu

After breakfast, go to the park headquarters for a briefing. Later on, you will be assigned a ranger guide to help you with the chimpanzee trekking experience. Upon meeting the chimps, you will be allowed to spend one hour in their presence. Take as many pictures as you wish before returning to your lodge for lunch. In the afternoon, you will check out of the lodge and embark on the drive to Bukavu town. Check in to your hotel for dinner and overnight.

Day 3: Lowland gorilla trekking in Kahuzi Biega National Park

After breakfast, report to the park headquarters for a briefing about lowland gorilla trekking. You will be given a ranger and grouped for this experience. Enter the Kahuzi Biega National Park to search for these amazing apes. Unlike mountain gorilla trekking, lowland gorilla trekking is less challenging. This is because the lowland gorillas dwell in the lowland areas. Upon meeting the gorillas, you will be allowed to spend one hour in their presence. Return to your lodge for lunch and relaxation. You may spend the afternoon reading a book or walking around to cool off and prepare for the great days ahead. Dinner and overnight will be at your lodge.

Day 4: Transfer to Volcanoes National Park and Gorilla Guardians Village Tour

After breakfast, check out of the lodge and embark on the drive to Volcanoes National Park. Volcanoes National Park is famous for being home to the endangered mountain gorillas. Traverse the endless rolling hills of Rwanda for 6 to 7 hours. Lunch will be along the way. Upon arrival, you will visit the Gorilla Guardians Village, formerly known as Ibyi’wacu Cultural Village. You will take part in the activities of the locals, including brewing local beer, traditional dances, harvesting crops, and many more. Day 5: Golden Monkey Trekking and transfer to Bwindi Impenetrable National Park

This is followed by a briefing at the park headquarters. Later, you will embark on the search for golden monkeys. The golden monkeys are amazing as they showcase their jumping skills. You will spend one hour in their presence upon meeting them. Return to your lodge for lunch. Later on, you will embark on the drive to Bwindi Impenetrable National Park. Day 6: Gorilla Trekking and Batwa Community Tour

After breakfast, you will report to the park headquarters for a briefing about mountain gorilla trekking in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park. The briefing takes about 30 minutes before you start on the search for the gorillas. Upon meeting the mountain gorillas, you will be allowed to spend one hour in their presence. Return to your lodge for relaxation and lunch. After lunch, check out of the lodge and embark on the amazing Batwa community tour. The Batwa people are believed to have dwelt in these forests for thousands of years. Later on, you will proceed to your lodge around Lake Bunyonyi. You will spend the night enjoying the breeze of the lake and the melodies of the many bird species on the lake.

Day 7: Explore Lake Bunyonyi

The entire 7^th day of your 12 Days Rwanda Congo & Uganda Tour belongs to Uganda’s deepest lake. The day will start with a leisurely breakfast. This will be followed by a boat cruise to explore the 29 islands on the lake. The major island to explore is the Akempene Island, formerly known as Punishment Island. It was here that girls who became pregnant before marriage were banished. Visit the Bakiga and Batwa people around the lake. Feel free to swim in the waters since they are bilharzia-free. Day 8: Transfer to Queen Elizabeth National Park and afternoon game drive in Ishasha Sector

After breakfast, check out of the lodge and drive to Uganda’s most popular safari destination – Queen Elizabeth National Park. The park is home to multiple animal, plant, and bird species. Lunch will be along the way. As you enter the park, you will take a game drive in the Ishasha Sector. The area is famous for being home to tree-climbing lions. The lions are seen climbing the acacia trees seeking a higher elevation to spot prey. On a lucky day, you will land on a pride of lions hunting down an antelope or buffalo. Proceed to your earlier booked lodge for dinner and spend the night there.

Day 9: Morning game drive in Kasenyi Sector and Afternoon boat cruise at Kazinga Channel

After breakfast, you will get on your 4×4 Land Cruiser for a game drive in the Kasenyi plains of the park. The sector is famous for being home to many grazers and elephants. You will meet Uganda kobs, warthogs, buffaloes, waterbucks, hippos, and many bird species. Return to your lodge for lunch. In the afternoon, you will go for a boat cruise on the Kazinga Channel. The channel is home to many birds, crocodiles, and hippos. You will get a chance to interact with the local fishermen and learn about the different species caught. In the evening, you will return to your lodge for dinner and spend the night there.

Day 10: Transfer to Murchison Falls National Park

After breakfast, check out of the lodge and start the journey to Murchison Falls National Park. You will have a leisurely lunch in Fort Portal City and may enjoy a short tour depending on the time and weather. Upon arrival at the park, check in to your lodge for dinner and overnight.

Day 11: Morning game drive and afternoon Boat cruise on the River Nile

You are almost making it to the final day of your safari. The day starts with an early breakfast. Later, you will take a game drive to explore Uganda’s biggest National Park. The park is home to 4 of the Big 5 animals. Explore it as far as you can while seeing animals like lions, leopards, antelopes, buffalo, elephants, and many more. Some of the birds to be seen include: the Abyssinian ground hornbill, hammer kops, African fishing eagle, great African kingfisher, and grey-crowned crested crane. Return to your lodge for lunch.

In the afternoon, you will take a boat cruise on the Nile River. You are now at the world’s longest river. The cruise will take you to the bottom of the falls. From here, you will hike to the top of the world’s strongest waterfalls. The falls are amazingly good, and they offer a scenic view for photography. In the evening, you will go to your lodge for dinner and overnight.

Day 12: Rhino tracking and transfer to Kampala – Departure 

On the final day of your safari, you will start with a leisurely breakfast. Check out of the lodge and embark on the drive to Kampala. You will have a lunch stopover in Masindi Town. Proceed to Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary for Rhino tracking. Explore the Sanctuary for stories of rhino conservation in Uganda. The driver will drop you at a hotel of your choice in Kampala. Virunga National Park is located on the eastern side of D.R. Congo near the Uganda and Rwanda borders. A hike at Mount. Nyiragongo is the most interesting part of this tour It will make you get exposed to the boiling lava lake on top of a mountain that recently erupted in 2021. While on your way to Virunga National Park, enjoy the incredible nature of beautiful Rwanda.    

Day 1: Transfer to Virunga National Park from Kigali

Arrive in Kigali, and as soon as you land, our company driver guide will welcome you with pleasure and immediately take you through a short briefing session regarding the entire tour and start the journey to Virunga National Park in D.R. Congo.

While on the way, enjoy beautiful landscapes, homesteads, and huge plantations. On reaching Virunga National Park, check in to your booked lodge for lunch and rest from that long journey as you prepare for another day. 

Day 2: Gorilla trekking adventure

Wake up very early in the morning, have breakfast, and set off to the park offices for briefing and cross-checking the trekking permits. While in the park, be able to spot some beautiful animals like giant forest hogs, and some primates like red-tailed and vervet monkeys. The adventure will take only 2-8 hours and an hour will be spent in the presence of mountain gorillas as you take photos, see how they handle their young ones, and how they react to people around them. When trekking is done, depart to your booked accommodation facility for relaxation and dinner.   

Day 3: Hike to the peak of Nyiragongo Mountain

On the 3^rd day of this tour, wake up in the morning before sunrise. Enjoy the cool temperatures of Virunga National Park, and enjoy breakfast. Proceed to the offices for check-in and start your hiking with a well-armed ranger. On your trek, meet some primates and watch beautiful birds as you continue to the top of Nyiragongo mountain.

On top of the mountain, explore a boiling lava lake that erupted recently in May 2021. Take some photos and head to the campsite where you will have lunch and spend a night at the summit. You will need some important equipment like headlamps and sleeping tents.       

Day 4: Descend from Mount. Nyiragongo and transfer back to Kigali

Wake up early for breakfast, pack your luggage check out from the campsite and descend the mountain as you enjoy virgin nature. Upon reaching at the base camp your driver will be ready to transfer you back to Kigali. Have an en-route lunch and an optional activity of Kigali city tour before departure flight. Nyiragongo contains one of the world’s largest Lava Lakes, also known as a boiling magma Lake. Its Crater measures 2 km, and at the summit, overnight stays are in the Nyiragongo summit shelters.

Virunga National Park is Congo’s iconic attraction and destination, holding not only Nyiragongo Volcano but also important wildlife. The 7800 sq. km park, established in 1925, is home to rare mountain gorillas, elephants, lions, bongo antelopes, chimps, 700 bird species, and more. Your hiking trip will begin and end in Kigali, Rwanda. Below is the detailed 3-day Nyiragongo Hike safari itinerary. 

Day 1: Your adventure begins with a comfortable hotel pick-up. You’ll then enjoy a Kigali city tour, taking in the sights and sounds of this vibrant city, before embarking on the drive to Congo.

Pick up at the hotel and start the 3-Day tour with a Kigali city tour, which includes visiting essential sites within the city. Kigali is small in size, unlike other African cities. Today, you will visit the Kigali Memorial Center, local markets, and others. Alternatively, you may visit the Ntamatta Church. Here, you will see the remains of those who succumbed to the 1994 genocide. You will leave Kigali for Congo through the Goma border and enjoy the scenic beauty of Rwanda and DR. Congo. Arrive early at the Goma border for clearing at the immigration offices and ensure your Congo Visa is in the system. You can obtain a Congo Visa either in advance from the embassy or on arrival at the border. Don’t forget to carry a yellow fever card and a valid passport.

Day 2: Begin the hike to the top of Nyiragongo Volcano (3470 m)

Have breakfast, and afterward, you will report to a briefing area for registration and get insight into some of the guidelines to follow. You can set off from Kibati with a porter helping you in carrying heavy luggage and a guide in the lead. The hike takes 4 to 5 hours, including navigating the forest around the lower slopes. Here, some small primates, flora, and birds will be spotted. As you head to the top, you will be amazed by the unique landscape. These include the Goma town, the Rwenzori Mountain ranges, the Virunga National Park, Lake Kivu & Kahuzi-Biega NP. At night, while at the summit shelters, you will have a memorable experience as you watch the boiling magma lake as it glows. The summit shelters are basic but comfortable, providing a unique opportunity to spend the night on the volcano.

Day 3: Descend to Kibati & transfer back to Kigali

The 3 Days  Congo Lowland gorillas offer you yet another remarkable primate adventure experience. This unique gorilla tour involves visiting the Eastern Lowland gorillas in the wild and you will be at Kahuzi-Biega National Park. It is the only park where these unique primates can be trekked in their natural habitat.

Kahuzi-Biega National Park was founded in 1970 mainly to conserve the Eastern Lowland gorillas (Grauer’s gorilla). It is a vast park with a land area measuring up to 6000 sq. km and derives its name from 2 dormant volcanoes –Mt. Kahuzi (3380 m) and Biega (2790 m). The park lies on the Eastern side of the D.R. Day 1: Drive from Kigali to Bukavu in the Congo

Leave Kigali for Congo lowland gorilla tour and you will get there via the Southern side of Rwanda. En route, expect to make stop visits at the royal palace in Nyanza (most famous as Rukaari). Proceed to Butare for lunch, and later visit the National Museum before heading to Bukavu crossing via Cyangugu border.

Day 2: Grauer’s gorilla trekking

A delicious breakfast will be enjoyed early in the morning and after, report to Kahuzi-Biega National Park offices to get briefed. At 8:00 am, begin your special trek through Kahuzi-Biega National Park to search for the Grauer’s gorillas. The primate trek will take 2-5 hours and a special one hour. This is meant for you to watch closely the lowland gorillas in the wild and take pictures.

Start trekking back after great moments with the Eastern lowland gorillas. Relax at the lodge till later in the afternoon.  Then you will take a walk to visit Tshibati waterfalls or Mbayo tea estates and get back for dinner and a night’s sleep in your respective lodges/hotels.

Day 3: Depart Bukavu for Kigali

You will be served a hot cup of tea/coffee and after, check out of your hotel property, and meet the driver guide. Start your road trip back to Kigali early and today marks the end of the 3 Days lowland gorilla trip.
