The Cyinzobe Trail in Nyungwe National Park

In the southwestern reaches of Rwanda, where the land seems to dissolve into an endless sea of rolling hills, lies one of Africa’s best-kept natural secrets: Nyungwe National Park. Often overshadowed by the celebrity status of the mountain gorillas in the Volcanoes National Park to the north, Nyungwe is a biodiversity hotspot of staggering proportions. It is one of the oldest rainforests on the continent, a verdant ark that has survived the ice ages and centuries of human encroachment. While many visitors flock here for the famous canopy walkway or the chimpanzee tracking, the true soul of Nyungwe is found deep in its undergrowth. To find it, you must lace up your boots and venture onto the Cyinzobe Trail in Nyungwe National Park.

The Cyinzobe Trail in Nyungwe Forest is not merely a walk; it is an immersive odyssey into the heart of the Albertine Rift. Spanning approximately 4.7 kilometres (roughly 3 miles) one way, it is often described as a “transitional” hike, moderate enough for the active novice but rugged enough to satisfy the seasoned trekker. It serves as a vital connector between the park’s main reception centre and the remote, wild beauty of the Kamiranzovu Swamp. However, to view it merely as a connector is to do it a disservice. The trail is a destination in itself, offering a masterclass in the flora, fauna, and primordial atmosphere of the Montane rainforest.

The Journey Begins

The adventure typically begins at the Uwinka Reception Centre, the nerve centre of Nyungwe’s trail network. Standing on the deck of the centre, looking out over the carpet of green stretching to the horizon, the air feels noticeably thinner and cooler than in the rest of Rwanda, a refreshing 15 to 20 degrees Celsius year-round.

As you step onto the trailhead, the transition is immediate. The sounds of modernity fade, replaced by the rhythmic hum of the forest. The Cyinzobe Trail starts with a deceptive, gentle slope, luring hikers into a sense of ease. The path is well-defined, winding through a dense thicket of trees that seem to compete aggressively for sunlight. Here, the vegetation is lush and almost tangible; giant ferns unfurl like prehistoric fountains, and old man’s beard lichens drape elegantly from the branches, filtering the sunlight into a soft, ethereal glow.

Within the first few hundred meters, the sensory overload begins. Your eyes scan the canopy for movement, and your ears strain to identify the source of the rustling leaves. This is the domain of the Angolan colobus monkey, a species endemic to these high-altitude forests. Unlike their louder cousins, the chimpanzees, the colobus move with a ghostly grace. Seeing a troop of them leaping across the canopy in their striking black and white coats, a visual explosion of contrast against the deep greens, is one of the trail’s early rewards. They watch you with curious, unblinking eyes, unbothered by the human presence, before continuing their foraging for leaves.

The Ascent and the Symphony of Birds

As the trail progresses, the gentle incline begins to sharpen. The Cyinzobe Trail in Nyungwe Forest is undulating, characterised by steep ridges that drop into deep river valleys. This topography is what makes Nyungwe such a vital water catchment area; the rain that falls here flows west into the Congo and east into the Nile. Hiking here, you are literally walking over the roof of Africa.

For the ornithologist, this section of the trail is paradise. Nyungwe is home to over 300 species of birds, many of which are endemic to the Albertine Rift. The air is filled with a complex cacophony of calls, the distinctive “kow-kow” of the Great Blue Turaco, a bird so beautiful it looks unreal with its brilliant blue and yellow plumage and regal crest. If you are lucky, you might spot the Red-collared Mountain Babbler, a rare prize for any birdwatcher. Your guide, an essential companion on this hike, will likely stop frequently, mimicking calls or adjusting binoculars to point out a Rwenzori Apalis or a Regal Sunbird flitting among the epiphytes.

The trail requires focus. The terrain can be muddy and slippery, a reminder that this is, after all, a rainforest that receives upwards of 2,000 millimetres of rain annually. The roots of massive trees crisscross the path like gnarly wooden snakes, acting as natural stairs. Every step demands mindfulness. Yet, there is a meditative quality to this exertion. The physical act of climbing pulls you out of your head and grounds you in the present moment. The smell of the earth, a rich mix of damp humus, decaying wood, and blooming wild orchids, becomes intoxicating.

The Kamiranzovu Connection

One of the unique aspects of the Cyinzobe Trail is its relationship with the Kamiranzovu Swamp. Unlike many mountain wetlands, Kamiranzovu is a montane swamp, a vast, bowl-shaped depression that collects water. As the trail skirts the edges of this ecosystem, the environment shifts subtly. The trees thin slightly, allowing for broader views of the surrounding mountains. The light changes, becoming brighter and more diffuse.

This area is a hotspot for wildlife seeking water and shelter. It is a quieter place, the heavy silence broken only by the distant, booming call of a chimpanzee or the rustle of an elephant, though seeing the latter is rare on this specific trail. It is here, amidst the giant lobelias and carpeted moss, that the sheer scale of Nyungwe becomes apparent. You realise you are a speck in a massive, breathing organism.

The guide will often point out the medicinal plants used by local communities for centuries. The “Umuvumbu” tree, whose roots are used for treating stomach ailments, or the “Umuravumba,” known for its antibacterial properties. The forest is not just a sanctuary for animals; it is a pharmacy for the people who have lived in its shadow for generations. This cultural context adds a layer of depth to the hike, transforming it from a purely physical pursuit into a lesson in ethnobotany.

The Challenge of the Return

Hiking the Cyinzobe Trail is an out-and-back experience, meaning the return journey requires retracing your steps. In many hikes, the return is a tedious anticlimax, but in Nyungwe, the forest looks entirely different when viewed from the opposite direction. The light has shifted; the shadows have lengthened. What was a climb into the unknown becomes a descent into familiarity.

On the return leg, the downhill sections prove to be just as taxing as the ascent. The mud demands a careful, zigzagging gait to prevent sliding. The thigh muscles burn, but the spirit is lifted by the fresh perspective of the landscape. You notice things you missed on the way up: a tiny chameleon clinging to a reed, the intricate pattern of a spider’s web glistening with dew, the panoramic vista through a gap in the foliage revealing the terraced hillsides of Rwanda far below.

This is the time for reflection. Nyungwe Forest National Park plays a critical role in combating climate change, sequestering vast amounts of carbon. Walking the Cyinzobe Trail, you feel the weight of this responsibility. The forest is resilient, yet fragile. The conservation success story of Nyungwe is one of Rwanda’s proudest achievements, and every tourist who walks these paths contributes to the protection of this UNESCO-recognised biosphere reserve.

Emerging from the Wild

As the trail widens and the sounds of the Uwinka Centre drift back into earshot, there is a palpable sense of accomplishment. The Cyinzobe Trail in Nyungwe typically takes 3 days and 2 nights to complete. Emerging from the dense canopy, blinking in the bright sunlight, you feel transformed. The dust of the trail is on your boots, the humid air of the forest clings to your clothes, and your mind is clear.

The hike offers more than just exercise; it provides a connection to a primordial world that has largely vanished from the planet. It reminds us that there are still wild places where nature rules, where silence can be deafening, and where the beauty of the world is measured not in man-made structures, but in the height of a tree and the call of a bird.

Bigogwe Cows Tour in Rwanda

Rwanda is celebrated for its breathtaking landscapes, wildlife, and resilient communities. But beyond the well-known highlights, the country offers something quieter, and arguably more memorable: experiences that connect visitors with local livelihoods. One such experience is the Bigogwe Cows Tour, a community-based activity that centres on cattle husbandry, traditional farming practices, and the everyday knowledge that sustains rural Rwanda.

If you’re looking for more than a standard Rwanda Cultural tour, and if you want to understand how people live, work, and care for their families, then a Bigogwe Cows Tour is an excellent place to start. It blends culture, agriculture, and hospitality in a way that feels both educational and respectful. It’s also a reminder that “tourism” can mean collaboration rather than extraction: visitors learn, locals guide, and the benefits can support communities directly.

Where does Bigogwe Cows Tour Take Place?

The Bigogwe Cows Tour in Rwanda takes visitors to rural areas where cattle are a central part of agricultural life. While Rwanda’s famous attractions draw travelers from all over the world, rural districts offer a different rhythm, one shaped by seasons, livestock needs, and the daily responsibilities of farming households. In these communities, cows aren’t merely animals; they are part of a wider system of food production, income, and traditional practices.

The tour is associated with the Bigogwe area, which is known for its agricultural activity and strong community ties. Travellers typically visit local farms with the support of guides who can explain the background of cattle rearing and the role of livestock in household economies. The experience is designed to feel hands-on without being intrusive, an approach that helps visitors appreciate the work behind the scenes.

Why Cows Matter in Rwandan Rural Life

In many rural communities worldwide, cows are valued for milk and manure. In Rwanda, that value extends further. Cattle contribute to:

Nutrition and dairy production: Milk can support family consumption and local markets when production and distribution are available.

Farming support: Manure improves soil fertility, which can boost crop yields.

Economic resilience: Livestock can provide a financial buffer through sale or exchange.

Cultural knowledge: Raising animals involves skills passed down through generations—how to feed, observe health, manage grazing, and respond to seasons.

The Bigogwe Cows Tour highlights these realities. Instead of presenting cattle husbandry as a distant “farm theme,” the tour shows it as an integrated lifestyle, where every task matters and where knowledge is embodied in daily routines.

What to Expect on a Bigogwe Cows Tour

Tours differ depending on the organiser and the season, but most Bigogwe Cows Tour experiences share core elements: guided interaction, farm activities, and storytelling from local hosts.

Meeting Your Guides and Hosts

The experience often begins with a warm welcome. Guides explain the purpose of the tour and help set expectations: what visitors will do, what they should observe, and how to approach the farm respectfully. This introduction is important because it frames the visit as learning and participation, not just “looking.”

Understanding Cattle Breeds and Keeping Practices

A significant portion of the tour usually focuses on how cattle are kept. Visitors may learn about:

How cows are housed or managed.

basic feeding practices,

how herders monitor animals,

and how farmers prepare for seasonal changes.

Guides may also describe common challenges such as the availability of pasture, health care needs, and the labour involved in tending animals. This helps visitors understand that cattle husbandry is not only a tradition, it’s also ongoing problem-solving.

Seeing Daily Farm Routines

A cattle farm is busiest at certain times of day. During the tour, visitors may witness daily routines such as cleaning, feeding, and observation. These moments make the experience feel grounded and real. You see that maintaining livestock requires time and consistency, not shortcuts.

Often, visitors learn how farmers balance cattle care with crop farming. In rural households, responsibilities are interconnected. While one task supports another, every decision influences the farm’s ability to thrive.

Learning About Manure Use and Soil Fertility

In many agricultural systems, manure is both waste and a resource. The Bigogwe Cows Tour commonly includes an explanation of how manure supports soil fertility. Visitors may observe how it is collected and how farmers incorporate it into land management.

This part of the tour can be particularly interesting because it connects livestock to crop production. The lesson is clear: the farm works like a cycle, where one form of “output” becomes the input for something else.

Cultural Storytelling and Community Connection

One of the most powerful aspects of a Bigogwe Cows Tour is the human dimension. Hosts often share stories about their families, what it means to raise cattle, and how rural life has evolved. These conversations can help visitors appreciate the values behind the work, patience, stewardship, collaboration, and pride.

Some Rwanda tours may also include small cultural elements such as local greetings or explanations of everyday life in the household. Even when the schedule is mostly farm-based, storytelling brings the experience beyond agriculture into community understanding.

The Educational Value: Learning Beyond the Surface

A Bigogwe Cows Tour is educational in a way that goes deeper than facts. It teaches visitors about systems: how farmers use resources, manage risks, and sustain productivity. It also challenges simplified views of rural life.

Instead of imagining farming as a static tradition, visitors see it as dynamic. Livestock care requires observation and adaptation. Farming decisions depend on weather, feed availability, and health conditions. Understanding these factors builds respect for farmers’ expertise.

For travelers who want to do “responsible tourism,” the tour’s structure matters. When visits are guided by locals and shaped around real livelihoods, visitors gain insight without turning people into props. It becomes a relationship rather than a performance.

When to Visit: Seasons and Practical Considerations

Rwanda’s agricultural calendar influences farm activity. While the tour can be available in many periods, weather conditions affect the comfort and what you’ll see. Visiting during times when farms are actively managing feeding, grazing, or soil preparation can make the experience especially informative.

Rainy periods may make paths muddy and some activities less accessible, but they also show how farmers adapt. Dry seasons may offer clearer ground and more visibility into routine work.

Your best choice depends on your preferences: do you want comfort and dry walking, or are you curious to see how farmers manage during more challenging weather?

Leaving With a New Perspective

When you finish a Bigogwe Cows Tour, you may notice that the most significant memories aren’t the sights of the farm alone, but the understanding you gained. You come away with a new appreciation for what it takes to sustain rural life and for the wisdom embedded in daily work.

Cattle husbandry in Rwanda isn’t simply an economic activity. It’s a relationship with land, animals, seasons, and community. By sharing that relationship with visitors, the Bigogwe Cows Tour in Rwanda turns travel into learning, and learning into respect.

Conclusion

The Bigogwe Cows Tour in Rwanda stands out as a meaningful alternative to conventional tourism. It’s grounded in agriculture, enriched by community storytelling, and designed to help visitors understand the importance of livestock in rural livelihoods. Whether you’re a curious traveler, a photography enthusiast who wants to learn responsibly, or someone who values cultural experiences with substance, this tour offers an encounter that feels both educational and human.

In a world where many travel experiences can be quick and superficial, the Bigogwe Cows Tour invites you to slow down. Step into a farm life shaped by care and knowledge. And leave Rwanda with a deeper understanding of how communities thrive, one cow, one field, and one season at a time.

Kigali City

Kigali is Rwanda’s capital, with one of the best infrastructures and well-organized safari activities. It is located on Nyarugenge Hill, which has one of the best views of the neighboring areas within the country. The city is one of the cleanest on the African continent. Kigali city was founded in 1907 by the German administrator and explorer Richard Kandt during the colonial period. Kigali became Rwanda’s capital after Rwanda gained its independence in 1962. The city has become Rwanda’s administrative center, with almost all the national offices, commercial banks, and many others.

The city’s natives usually use French, Rwandese, Swahili, and sometimes English. The town harbors three tribes, the Tusi, Hutu, and Twa, which have become a linguistic city. The city is one of the cleanest in Africa, and plastic bags are not accepted. While visiting the town, you won’t see any litter.

The city has one of the worst histories due to the 1994 Rwanda genocide, where over 25,000 people were killed. The trigger of this genocide was the death of the then-president of Rwanda, Juvenal Habyarimana, who was assassinated. The assassination led to the start of the genocide, which created hatred between the Hutu and the Tutsi. Since then, Rwanda has undergone significant transformation and is now one of the safest countries in the world. Rwanda is at the forefront of pioneering and advocating for global peace. This has seen the country’s tremendous tourism growth and development.

What to see in Kigali City (Attractions)

Kigali Genocide Memorial Center

The Kigali Genocide Memorial Center has a rich history of the 1994 genocide of the Hutu and Tutsi. During this genocide, over 25,000 people were killed, and some of the remains are in this center. The cause of this genocide was the assassination of the ruling president in 1994. Survivors of the genocide buried the people who had lost their lives in this center. The travelers on their Rwanda safaris, doing a city tour, will visit the site to learn more about the history and the leading cause of the war, which is so touching. Other genocide sites in Rwanda are found in the areas of the Gisozi memorial site, Gisenyi, Bisesero, Nyanza, and many others.

Presidential Palace Museum

This museum was founded in the former state house of Rwanda’s president in 1994. His assassination led to the Rwandan genocide. President Juvenal Habyarimana was the second serving president from 1973 to 1994. He was a dictator who had ruled Rwanda for a long time. He was flying out of the country with Burundi’s president, Cyprien Ntaryamira, who served only two months. The plane crash was due to a missile that was shot from Kigali, which led to their death. Hutu people believed that the other communities were behind the killing of their president. This led to the rise of the genocide. The plane’s remains were taken to this place, along with other properties the president used at that time.

Belgian Memorial Site

During the genocide, the Belgian government, under the United Nations, sent troops to Rwanda to stop the genocide from continuing. Ten of the army of soldiers were sent to guard the prime minister, Agathe Uwilingiyimana, who was against the genocide at the former military base of Rwanda. When the Hutu army attacked the base, they started shooting at each other with the Belgian army, and they were all killed, including the prime minister. Then, the United Nations had to withdraw all the Belgian troops from the area, and the genocide continued to rise. On 2000 7th April, the government of Belgium commemorated at this site for their army that had lost lives during the genocide.

Sainte Famille Church

The church is located on a hill in the area of Rugenge, and it was constructed in 1913 during the colonial era as part of the German colonial empire. During the genocide, most people’s lives were lost. Since the father, Wenceslas Munyeshyaka, was armed and had collaborated with the Hutu army, and helped them to take people out of the church to be killed. After this scenario, most Christians in this area converted to Christianity.

It became famous in 1994 during the genocide, when it had to host over 1,400 refugees of the Tutsi community. The Belgian airline built this hotel in 1973. During the genocide, Mr. Paul Rusesabagina, the manager of the hotel, helped hide the refugees. Mr. Paul is featured in the 2004 documentary Hotel Rwanda2004 Documentary Hotel Rwanda.
Kandt House Museum

This was known as the Natural History Museum and was later named the Kandt House Museum. The museum was named after a German colonialist called Richard Kandt. During his time, he changed the name of the area from Nyarugenge to Kigali with the help of King Cyirima I Rugwe, as it was difficult for the colonialists to pronounce. This house was their first home in Rwanda. Now, it has become one of the sites to visit during the Rwanda safari.

The Gorilla Guardians Village, also known as the Ibyi’wacu village, is located in Rwanda near the Volcanoes National Park in the northern province of Rwanda. This village showcases Rwanda’s culture and serves as a testament to the transformative power of positive change. The government of Rwanda set up the town for the former poachers who were hunters and gatherers living within the park. These poachers usually hunt gorillas for food. The government set up this non-profit village to change the poachers’ lives, as they shouldn’t believe in hunting down wildlife for food. They have now transformed into cultural dancers, artisans, and other activities that have transformed their lives.

The communities that live in this village include the Hutu, Tutsi, and Batwa.
Visit to the king’s palace.

While on your Rwanda gorilla safari in the Gorilla Guardians Village, visiting the king’s palace is one of the essential activities. While visiting the king’s palace, a traveler can see how the kings in ancient times used to rule and manage their communities. These kings were usually feared and respected by their subjects. The ceremonial activities were all done within the palace, giving a clear view of the Ibyi’wacu village.

Banana beer brewing

This is one of the essential activities. In the past, banana beer brewing was usually done during ceremonial times like weddings and the crowning of the kings and queens. Travelers on their Rwanda safari will engage in the brewing process. They will start by collecting the ripened bananas and yellowish banana leaves. Then they will begin by pounding the bananas and mixing them with the leaves. Then the juice from the banana will be mixed with clean water, and filtered later. After filtering, it will be ready for travelers to drink. Usually, they also have brewed beer and banana juice mixed with sorghum prepared for drinking. The results from this activity will be a lesson for the natives of the area to keep learning and continue protecting the gorillas.

While on your Rwanda safari, the Batwa community visit is among the most interesting. You will engage the first inhabitants of the forests, who are the shortest in the world. You will learn about their way of life during a visit to this community. For instance, they would gather food, hunt, make fire, and do many other things. Through encounters with them, you know they live in their daily life. Furthermore, the Batwa communities can also be found in the Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, Mgahinga Gorilla National Park, and Semuliki National Park in Uganda.

While on your Rwanda safari, visit the Gorilla Guardians village. Travelers need to have the personality to engage in the activities available within the town to motivate the community. More so, a traveler on the Rwanda safari is required to keep environmental conservation in mind. No littering or sustainable tourism practices are practiced in the community. By respecting these practices, visitors can contribute to preserving the unique culture and wildlife.

Gishwati Mukura National Park

Gishwati Mukura National Park is the youngest national park in Rwanda. The park was gazetted in 2019 as a national park. It is the fourth national park in Rwanda that boosts tourism after the volcanoes, Akagera, and Nyungwe National Park. This park was originally a forest reserve in the 1970s. The forest covered 80% of the area. But during the 1994 Rwanda genocide, the refugees had shifted to this area, where they were hiding away from their enemies. Later, they had to cut down the forests in the area to create land for settlement. A significant part of the park was destroyed, including wildlife and forests.

History of the Park

In 2001, only 15000 acres of forest cover remained, with less wildlife out of over 250000 acres of the reserve. The Gishwati area conservation program was introduced in 2007 with an agreement with the government of Rwanda and the Great Ape Trust. The program was aimed at protecting the rich biodiversity in the area. The reserve was later under the management of a nongovernmental organization called the Association Hope in 2011, and is up to date. The organization is still restoring nature in the reserve, and it is now at 67%.

Gishwati Mukura National Park comprises two forests, including the Gishwati and Mukura Forest reserves. In 2015, the government aimed to plant more tree species in the forest to stabilize the challenges that they are facing, soil infertility, and regulate the water flow on the slopes of the hill. The Gishwati forest reserve used to extend into the areas of Lake Kivu towards the tropical forests of the Democratic Republic of Congo. Now the park is the smallest in Rwanda, covering an area of 34 square kilometers and located at the edge of the Nile basin. The park is home to over 395 bird species, 60 tree species, and many mammal species.

What can you do in the Gishwati Mukura National Park? Prepare to be amazed by the unique experiences this park offers.

While on your Rwanda safari, there is a variety of activities to do, which include;

Birding

Since the park is small, birding is more productive. The park is home to over 395 bird species, with 20 endemic species in the area, making it a birding paradise for birding trips. Travelers on their Rwanda safari will see birds like the mountain yellow weaver, red-throated Alethe, Dusky Crimson-wing, Rwenzori Batis, Ragel sunbird, and many others. This makes the smallest park in Rwanda a birding haven for travelers on their Rwanda safari.

Chimpanzee trekking

During your Rwanda safari, a traveler has the opportunity to walk into the Chimpanzee world. Chimpanzees are considered the closest cousins to human beings, sharing over 98% of our DNA. So, the travelers on their Rwanda safari will have to track the chimpanzees in their natural habitats. While you track the chimpanzees, you will have the opportunity to learn about their feeding mode, how they live, and how they care for their young ones. During the activity, you will have an experienced ranger. They will guide you on this activity. Also, in Rwanda, this chimpanzee trekking can be done in the Nyungwe Forest National Park.

Golden monkey trekking

The golden monkeys are one of the fascinating primates in Rwanda’s smallest park. This activity will involve walking on foot within the forests of the park. These old monkeys are golden orange, which is where the name originates. They usually live in the Bamboo type of forest within the park. As you are going to track the golden monkeys, you must have a ranger. He will interpret their behavior for you. Then you will have one hour observing them in their natural habitat.

Waterfalls hike

This is one of the rewarding activities in the park which is usually done by healthy and fit travelers on their Rwanda safari. During this hike, you will have a goal to reach the final point of the Kazenenza Falls. This is one of the most thrilling adventures in the park for travelers on their Rwanda safari. During the hike, you will also spot the plant species that are only found in this park.

Accommodation facilities in the park

The comfort of the travelers on their Rwanda safari in the accommodation facilities offers the best experience for them to enjoy the activities. In Gishwati Mukura National Park, there are limited accommodation facilities since the park is still new. The travelers on their Rwanda safari are usually advised to use the accommodation facilities in the Nyungwe Forest National Park since the park is near Gishwati Mukura National Park. The accommodation facilities are generally categorized as luxury, mid-range, and budget.

Luxury accommodation facilities offer high-end and first-class services to travelers on their Rwanda safari. These facilities are desirable for travelers. The facilities include: Gishwati Lodge, the only lodge in the Gishwati Mukura National Park, which is so luxurious. The other luxury facilities are found in the Nyungwe Forest National Park. Midrange accommodation facilities offer usual services, slightly less than the luxury services, for travelers on their Rwanda safaris. These facilities are in the Nyungwe Forest National Park near the Gishwati National Park. They include: Nyungwe Top View Lodge, Golden Monkey Hotels, Peace Guest Hotel, and many others. Budget accommodation facilities are facilities that offer standard services, and these facilities are for travelers on a tight budget on their Rwanda safaris. They include: the Uwinka campsite, the Gisakura family hostel, and many others.

What is the best time to visit Gishwati Mukura National Park?

Gishwati Mukura National Park is open throughout the year for travelers on the Rwanda safari. Rwanda has two seasons: wet and dry. The best time to visit the park is usually in the dry season, which runs from June to September and December to February. Activities like chimpanzee trekking, golden monkey trekking, and hiking are easier during this period. This is because the area is dry for them, and the vegetation is dry for tracking these animals.

On the other hand, during the year’s wet season, the area is so moist and slippery that some activities like hiking become difficult. And the most fantastic thing is that the chimpanzees come closer to the lower regions during the wet season. They come closer since there is more food, and the vegetation is so thick that it supports the chimpanzees’ life. Additionally, the wet season comes with a reduction in the number of people visiting the park per day. This implies that the experience can be easily personalized. Additionally, accommodation is cheaper in low seasons, making it the best time to visit the park, especially for budget travelers.

How do you think you could access the Gishwati Mukura National Park?

The park is mainly accessed by a road where a traveler is on a Rwanda safari from the Kigali International Airport to the park. Accessing the park will take about 3 to 4 hours since Rwanda’s speed limit is 60 km per hour. There are no domestic flights currently moving to the reserve.

In conclusion, you are almost there now that you know about Gishwati Mukura National Park. Book your Rwanda Safari and create a signature of memories.

Lake Kivu

Lake Kivu is an Albertian rift valley lake in Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of Congo, with an elevation of 1463 meters above sea level. It is one of the great lakes, with fresh water covering 2730 square kilometers. The lake contains geological gases, methane, and carbon dioxide, which in the past affected the lives of the community near the shores. Lake Kivu stretches from the north of the Virunga mountains to the Nyungwe forest, making it the largest lake in Rwanda.

Tectonic forces formed Lake Kivu within the rift valley and the depression within the valley. This depression was later filled with water, leading to the lake’s formation. Beautiful hills and many green, lush islands surround Lake Kivu, creating a serene and tranquil environment. The lake, with its calm waters, is the main fishing point in Rwanda since it hosts multiple aquatic life, such as tilapia fish, catfish, and many others. This lake has the major beaches and resorts of Rwanda, with one of the top facilities in Cyangugu, Kibuye, and Gisenyi. Travelers on their Rwanda safari usually visit the lake for relaxation activities after gorilla trekking, chimpanzee trekking, and many others.

What to do in Lake Kivu?

In Lake Kivu, there are a variety of activities that one can do during one’s Rwanda safari.

Bird watching

Lake Kivu is a destination that travelers who love birds would love to visit since it is home to over 400 bird species, offering a diverse and exciting birding experience. These species can be seen in the green islands of the lake and the surrounding hills. Some bird species that one can visit include the African fishing eagle, shoebill, pied kingfisher, and osprey. The area is home to 10 other endemic species, which makes it a birding paradise for travelers on their Rwanda safari.

Hot springs and Geothermal baths

Lake Kivu has many geothermal activities taking place around it. This geothermal energy leads to the formation of hot springs. Travelers to Rwanda will visit these hot springs to take a bath and have a local massage from natives of the area. These hot springs are also considered to be natural saunas in Rwanda. The natives consider these hot springs to cure many diseases since they contain some minerals in the hot water.

Hiking tours

The lake has many surrounding hills, and these features offer travelers on their Rwanda safari a unique opportunity to go hiking, adding an adventurous element to their trip. While hiking, you will have the chance to have aerial views of this fantastic lake. During the hike, travelers will be able to see some small primates in the forests on the hill, like vervet monkeys, white colobus monkeys, and many others. The other view during the hike is the community on the other side of the lake.

Aquatic adventures

While on the Rwanda safari, this lake offers several aquatic adventures since the water in the lake is so calm for these activities. The primary activities on this lake include jet skiing, kayaking, speed boat rides, boat cruises, and many others. While enjoying the aquatic adventures on Lake Kivu, you can see some bird species around the green islands. It’s important to note that safety precautions should be observed, such as wearing life jackets and following the instructions of the guides. This activity offers an adrenaline rush and a memorable experience on their Rwanda safari.

Where to Stay on a Safari to Lake Kivu?

The accommodation facilities in Lake Kivu are positioned to offer incredible scenic views of the lake. The facilities on the lake offer one of the best comforts for travelers in Rwanda. These facilities range from luxury to midrange, standard, and budget accommodations. Most of the lodges overlook the lake.

Luxury accommodation facilities offer desirable high-end services for travelers on their Rwanda safari. These facilities include: the Lake Kivu Serena Hotel, Gorillas Lake Kivu Hotel, and many more.

Midrange accommodation facilities offer budget and not-too-expensive services to travelers on their safaris. Usually, these facilities create value for money for the services offered. They include Paradise Malahide, Palm Beach Resort, and many others.

Budget accommodation facilities are sometimes considered low-end facilities that offer services to travelers on a tight budget during their Rwanda safari. These facilities include Planet Hotel, Beach Gardens, Macheco Resort, and many others.

What is the best time to visit Lake Kivu?

The lake is open for travelers on their Rwanda safari throughout the year. The best time to visit Lake Kivu is in the dry months of the year. That is to say, June to September and December to February. During this period, the area has the best scenic views, with dry vegetation and clear skies. Additionally, in the wet season, there are usually high water levels and thick vegetation, which affect the exploration. On the other hand, the wet season is also available for a visit to Lake Kivu. During this period, there is less traffic; travelers get a more personalized experience since it is usually a low season. Accommodation facilities offer lower prices in low seasons, making it the best time for budget travelers to visit Lake Kivu.

How to get there?

Lake Kivu can be accessed by either air or road transport in Rwanda from Kigali city. Using the road, you drive through the tarmacked roads of Rwanda, where you will spend 3 hours traveling to Lake Kivu. The lake can be accessed in Gisenyi, Kibuye, and Cyangugu. On the other hand, the lake can be accessed by air transport, where travelers on their Rwanda safari must book a chartered domestic flight from Kigali airport to the Gisenyi airstrip. On arrival at the Gisenyi airstrip, you will be transferred to Lake Kivu for exploration by road.

Akagera National Park – The home to Big 5

Just in case you are on a Safari in Rwanda and interested in having that wildlife feel or experience, Akagera National Park in the North Eastern part of Rwanda is the place to be. With an area size of 1122 km2, Akagera National Park is Rwanda’s only Savannah Park that covers almost similar wildlife experiences as the rest of the parks in East Africa. These include; Masai Mara National Park in Kenya, Serengeti National Park, and Ngorongoro Conservation Area in Tanzania.

Akagera National Park derives its name from the Akagera River which feeds into Lake Ihema and Lake Victoria the largest freshwater lake in the whole world. During the Rwanda Genocide Era, the park was greatly encroached on by refugees and the cattle-keeping communities in Rwanda. These hunted down most of the wild animals to extinction. They reduced the park size by 10% of the original 2500 km2. However, in 2010, the Rwanda government under its statutory body the Rwanda Development Board took over the management of this Park. This brought a whole new kind of tourism and conservation to this park.

TOURIST ACTIVITIES AND ATTRACTIONS IN AKAGERA NATIONAL PARK

BIRDING

Today Akagera National Park has over 500 bird species. These range from water and some forests to savannah species. They include; the Papyrus Gonolek with this count bird watching tourists on Rwanda tours in this park will live up to their expectations.

GAME DRIVES

The Safari Game Drives in Akagera are the most popular tourist activity in Rwanda. The game drives here are so rewarding whereby you are exposed to more chances of a lot of wildlife in a shorter period. The most common ones are Giraffes, Zebras, elephants, impalas, and other small primates like the vervet monkeys.

BOAT CRUISE

Travelers on Rwanda Safaris in Akagera National Park could also go for a Boat trip on Lake Ihema inside the park which is the second largest lake in Rwanda after Lake Kivu. The Boat Cruise in the Park on Lake Ihema will give you that water-based experience that you will find nowhere else in Rwanda. Prepare yourself to spot some basking Crocodiles, yawning hippos, Zebras quenching down their thirst and a lot of birdlife for Bird Lovers.

COMMUNITY VISITS

You could also visit the cattle-keeping communities around the Park to know how they go about their daily pastoral life. Akagera National Park is that one Rwanda tour destination every traveler on an Africa Tour should not skip out. Why not add this beautiful national park to your Tours in Africa?

Volcanoes National Park Rwanda

In the Northwest of Rwanda, one comes across the Volcanoes National Park, a section of Virunga Mountains composed of five mountains that are part of the total 8 mountains making up the Virunga conservation area. This is shared by three countries and these include Uganda, Rwanda, and the Democratic Republic of Congo.

Also known as Parc National de Vulcans in French, consists of volcanic mountains which are Mount Karisimbi the highest of all, and Mountains Gahinga, Sabyinyo, Muhabura, and Bisoke. The Park is a popular destination for trekking our cousins the endangered Mountain Gorillas. Virunga mountain range areas are a habitat for mountain gorillas and therefore the other areas in which we can find these species are Mgahinga and Virunga National Parks located in Uganda and D.R. Congo respectively but are all within the Virunga region.

Visit the Dian Fossey Grave

Diane Fossey, a celebrated primatologist carried out her research in the Karisoke Research Center at Mount Karisimbi located within the park and therefore one of the first gorilla groups made available for trekking was located in Volcanoes National Park. She spent over 18 years since 1967 researching and studying mountain gorillas, this involved studying their behavior and seeing if they could be around humans which turned out to be the successful gorilla trekking excursions carried out today.

Even after her death, she was laid to rest at Mount. Karisimbi and therefore tourists visiting the park can always pay tribute to her. The movie “Gorillas in the Mist” was shot within the park and the feature gorillas are one of the gorillas that were trained by Diane Fossey.

Volcanoes National Park is a conservation area whose major aim is to conserve the mountain gorillas and the vegetation cover within it. Several conservation measures have been put in place like no littering in the park, few people are allowed to visit the gorillas daily to prevent them from easily contracting diseases and also guards have been deployed to protect the park from encroachers and poachers. It was also declared as a UNESCO World Heritage site to support the conservation measures.

The Park has diverse vegetation cover consisting of Hypericum located at the low altitude areas of the park, sub-alpine vegetation in areas above 3300 meters, Afro Alpine vegetation covers the high-altitude areas above 4000 meters and it consists of short shrubs and bamboo shoots.

Besides the mountain gorillas, there are diverse animal species consisting of golden monkeys, chimpanzees, buffaloes, hyenas, duikers, waterbucks, antelopes, elephants, leopards, reptiles, and a variety of bird species.

Activities and attractions within Volcanoes National Park

Gorilla Trekking

This is one of the few locations in the world where these gigantic primates can be met and therefore one of the most popular destinations for gorilla trekking in the world. The gorilla groups are only visited by 8 members per day. With over 12 groups currently available in the park, there are only 96 gorilla permits available and these go for $1500 per person. Gorilla groups are like families headed by a male-dominant silverback, they consist of 10 -30 members, though some gorillas at times get to live in solitary before joining or creating a group.

Gorilla trekking is always started in the morning and commences with a briefing that introduces you to what gorillas are and what makes them special. You are also given guidelines on how to behave once you meet them.

The difficulty of gorilla trekking depends on where the gorilla group is located. The activity takes about 6 hours and it requires being physically prepared as it involves climbing to high altitude areas. You also need good hiking boots, raincoats, long clothing, cameras to capture good moments, and energy foods to keep you going. You could always hire potters to help you carry your luggage and walking sticks for support during the navigation.

Trekking Golden Monkeys

Golden monkey trekking is another popular activity second to gorilla trekking. Unlike gorilla trekking, monkeys live within trees in low-altitude areas, and therefore getting to them is not a challenge. This activity involves visiting the monkey areas and trekking through the trails leading towards them where you will see them jumping from one tree to another.
