Ajai Wildlife Reserve

Ajai Wildlife Reserve is located in northeastern Uganda in the west Nile region – Arua district. The reserve was first gazette in 1962 as a white rhino sanctuary and 1965 as a game reserve. The name of the reserve originated from a chief in the west Nile called Chief Ajai. He controlled the reserve in the 1930s until it was taken over in 1962 as a white rhino sanctuary. By that time, the reserve had over 60 to 80 white rhinos, which were hunted down by the poachers for the horns. In 1962, the anti-poaching project from world wildlife was fighting this poaching but it did not stop until the rhinos went into extinction.

In 2002, the government of Uganda had to cut off 12 kilometers of the total land of the reserve for human settlement leaving the reserve with 148 square kilometers. This affected the reserve tremendously. In 2008, the reserve was privatized to an organization. This organization only offers sport hunting and photography. There are fewer tourism activities in the reserve since the reserve is being conserved for future generations. Ajai Wildlife Reserve is made of swampy vegetation type, with a lot of the river deposits from the river Nile with its tributaries that is to say the Ala and Acha. More so, in the reserve, there are several swamp islands including the Ajai island formed by river depositions of the Ala River.

What to see on your safari to Ajai Wildlife Reserve?

Wildlife species

In 1962, the rhinos were the major wildlife in the reserve but there are some more wildlife species to see in Ajai while on a Uganda safari. Also, the Uganda Wildlife Authority has reintroduced buffaloes and white rhinos. The other wildlife species in the reserve are warthogs, sitatungas, zebras, common duikers, Oribis, Uganda Kobs, and many others. The primate species in the reserve include; vervet monkeys, black and white monkeys, olive baboons, and many others. The reptiles are the crocodiles, pythons, and many others.

Bird species

The birds are of different types in the reserve but in small numbers. These species include; grey-crowned cranes, Marabou stocks, African fishing eagles, white-backed vultures, helmeted Guinea fowl, black-headed weavers, little bee-eaters, and others. Here birders on their Uganda safari will have the opportunity to enjoy their birding safari within the reserve.

What to do on your safari in Ajai Wildlife Reserve?

Nature walks or safari walks

Travelers on their Uganda safari will have the opportunity to enjoy their safari on foot within the reserve. This safari walk will involve the use of an armed ranger guide while in the reserve. During this safari walk you will be able to spot animals like duikers, Uganda Kobs, buffaloes, rhinos, and many others. This is done in the paved and mapped trails of the reserve. During this nature walk, you are required to put on light clothing, pack enough water, and also have mosquito repellents since the reserve has a quite number of wetlands.

Game drives

This is one of the major activities that travelers on their Uganda safari would wish to spot wildlife in the reserve in a 4×4 safari van within the trails of the reserve. During this game drive, the travelers will spot wildlife like buffaloes, rhinos, Uganda Kobs and many others where this wildlife spotted will offer a traveler an opportunity to enjoy his safari within the reserve.

Birding

The siting of bird species within the reserve is one of the essential key activities within the reserve. Birding in the reserve is one of the amazing opportunities that travelers on their safari will enjoy. This activity involves walking on foot to the reserve to site binoculars and it is recommended to have birding books, binoculars, and many other equipment that will help you to site the bird species in the reserve.

Where to stay?

There are no facilities within the reserve, but travelers on their Uganda safari will tend to choose facilities in Arua City, Gulu, and the Murchison Falls National Park. Also, within the reserve, there are campsites for travelers who would wish to have a night in the reserve through camping or sometimes hire tent facilities from the Uganda Wildlife Authority. It is also recommended for the travelers on their Uganda safaris to always book in advance to ensure availability in these facilities

What is the best time to visit Ajai Wildlife Reserve?

Ajai Wildlife Reserve is always open throughout the year for travelers on the Uganda safari. However, the best months for travelers to enjoy the reserve are during the dry months of the year. That is to say June to September and December to February. During this time the reserve is so dry and chances of spotting wildlife are high. The reserve is made up of swamps which usually have low volumes of water. The wet season of the year becomes difficult since the reserve will have slippery roads. More so, there will be flooding caused by the high levels of swamp water. However, this could also be the best time for travelers interested in taking on a walking challenge during their safari. Additionally, low seasons come with a reduction in accommodation prices. This makes the low season the best time to visit Ajai, especially for budget travelers.

How to get there?

The reserve is located in northeastern Uganda where it is about 6 to 7 hours from Kampala. It is recommended to use a 4×4 safari van since the roads are slippery, especially during the wet seasons. Additionally, the other route is via the Murchison Falls National Park. Here, you will use a ferry via the Nile River to the reserve through Para. Furthermore, you can use a direct domestic flight from Entebbe Airport or the Kajansi Airstrip to the Murchison Falls National Park or Arua. Then you will be transferred by road to the reserve.

Ngamba Island Chimpanzee Sanctuary, the largest of its kind in Uganda, was established in 1997 to provide a home for over 40 orphaned chimpanzees. Situated on Lake Victoria, it draws primate enthusiasts during their safaris in Uganda. Many visitors enjoy observing the chimpanzees as they play and feed within the forested area. Spanning about 100 hectares, 98% of this land is covered in forest. The chimpanzees here are orphans, rescued from poachers in various protected regions of Uganda and nearby locations, with some thought to have been sold as pets on the black market.

The Chimpanzee Sanctuary and Wildlife Conservation Trust, a non-governmental organization, oversees the sanctuary in East Africa. Its primary mission is to rescue chimps from poaching and the illegal pet trade. One of the main activities at this sanctuary is chimpanzee trekking. Chimpanzee feedings are scheduled and include supplementary food to ensure their health. Additionally, travelers on their Uganda safari can observe chimpanzees in their natural habitat.

The Chimpanzee Sanctuary and Wildlife Conservation Trust is a nongovernmental organization that manages the chimpanzee sanctuary in the East African region.
What can you do in the Ngamba Island Chimpanzee Sanctuary?

While in the Ngamba Island Chimpanzee Sanctuary, there are a variety of activities to do. These include;

Chimpanzee trekking

This is the key activity within the Ngamba Island Chimpanzee Sanctuary. And usually, it can be done in the morning or the afternoon. During this activity, you will have time to encounter the chimpanzee closely to learn about their behavior and life. A chimpanzee is considered a close relative to humans, with over 98% of their DNA. During the chimpanzee trekking tour, you are required not to wear brightly colored clothes that may scare away the chimpanzees. The other requirements are face masks, waterproof clothing, a backpack, a camera, and many others. The cost for a chimpanzee trekking tour is [insert cost here]. Chimpanzee trekking can also be done in different parts of the country, like Kibale National Park, Kyambura Gorge, and Kalinzu Forest Reserve.

Feeding of the chimpanzees

Feeding the chimpanzees is a voluntary activity travelers do on their Uganda safari. The activity is usually done in the afternoon and it is on a balanced diet basis to overcome malnutrition. This activity starts with preparing the food, environment enrichment, cleaning, and recording keeping. This is one of the volunteering activities which also involves funding to purchase food for the chimpanzees.

Birding tours

The Ngamba Island Chimpanzee Sanctuary is home to over 140 bird species. This makes it a birding destination for the birders on their Uganda safari. The bird species include the green Cuckoo, Grey heron, Grey crowned crane, Gull-billed tern, Hadada Ibis, White-throated bee-eater, and many others. This makes the island a true birder’s haven away from the chimpanzee trekking. A visit to Ngamba Island can be combined with a birding tour at Mabamba Wetland for shoebill stork tracking.

Accommodation facilities in the Ngamba Island Chimpanzee Sanctuary

There are fewer accommodation facilities on Ngamba Island, and the only facility on the island is the Ngamba Eco Lodge, which has the best views of Lake Victoria on each side. The lodge offers [insert details about the lodge’s amenities and services]. The other facilities a traveler on a Uganda safari would have from Ngamba Island are in Entebbe. In Entebbe, there is a variety of accommodation facilities that travelers can choose from. These include: Lake Victoria Serena Hotel, Green Valley Resort, Via Via Hotel, Jet Villas, Sky Hotel, Pretoria Hotel, and many others. Each of these facilities offers [insert details about the facilities’ amenities and services].

What is the best time to visit the Ngamba Island Chimpanzee Sanctuary?

Ngamba Island Chimpanzee Sanctuary can be visited throughout the year. The best time to visit the island is during the dry months of the year, that is to say, December to February and June to September. During these months, the area is clearer, and you can track the wildlife on the island. On the other hand, there is a low chance of seeing wildlife during the wet months of the year since the vegetation is thick due to the heavy rains. Also, during these months, there is less traffic. This implies that one will get a more personalized tour since the guides have fewer travelers to attend to. The other advantage is that accommodation facilities in Uganda tend to lower their prices during the low seasons. This might be the best time for budget travelers to visit Ngamba Island Chimpanzee Sanctuary.

How to get there?

Ngamba Island Chimpanzee Sanctuary is located on Ngamba Island in Lake Victoria. Here you need to take a boat ride which is either a speed boat or a traditional boat to the island. The boat ride will take about 40 to 50 minutes using a speed boat and the traditional boat will take about one hour to reach the island. The chimpanzee sanctuary is usually a 1 day excursion tour where travelers on their safari to Uganda will enjoy this destination since it is near the airport.

Now that you have learned about the Ngamba Island Chimpanzee Sanctuary, you can book your tour by [insert process of booking a tour here]. Once your tour is booked, you can look forward to creating an everlasting memory with the magical primates.

Mabamba Wetland

The Mabamba Wetland is located in Entebbe in the northern part of Lake Victoria which is believed to be the second-largest freshwater lake in the world. The swamp is covered by thick mashes of papyrus, water lilies, and other wetland vegetation. The wetland is home to a variety of bird species found in the Kasenge village. The communities living next to the swamp majorly depend on the mining of sand, fishing, and hunting which has greatly affected the area. It was recognized as a Ramsar site in 2006. This was when the government increased its protection against encroachment and it contained threatened species. Presently, this area is designated as an important birding area by BirdLife International.

The wetland is a host of over 260 bird species and also some mammal species. it also hosts 38% of the world’s population of blue swallows and the sitatunga antelopes often referred to as the swamp antelopes are also available. All these species are facing challenges of extinction due to increased hunting. However, the government is working hard to overcome this illegal hunting. The government is working with international organizations to overcome this encroachment.

The most sought-after bird for travelers on their Uganda safari in the Mabamba wetland is the shoebill stork. Since the wetland is rich in lungfish which is a favorite food for the shoebill stork. However, the fishermen on this island believe that the shoebill on the wetland has reduced the number of lungfish that are usually caught. The fishermen decided to kill them so that they would get enough fish which led to their reduction in number. Currently, about 12 shoebills are remaining in the Mabamba wetland.

What to do in the Mabamba wetland?

Shoebill tracking

Shoebill tracking or whale head stork tracking is one of the most famous and popular activities done in the Mabamba wetland. This involves canoeing on the small canoes around the swamp. Shoebills nest within the swamp vegetation which is always floating on an island and this is 3 metres in width. During the breeding time, they lay chalky white eggs in their nests. When the eggs are laid, there are rivalry fights between the hatched chicks and these chicks tend to fight which will out-compete them and kill them at times. There seasons of the hatching and laying of eggs change with the seasonal flood cycle.

The shoebills are found in over 9 countries in Africa in swampy areas in small population groups. They also live in pairs of male and female towards the various ends of their shared territory. Shoebill tracking is usually done very early in the morning since it is still cool for the day. During this shoe bill tracking, you are required to have waterproof equipment any time it rains.

Birding

The Mabamba wetland is a birder’s paradise for travelers on their birding tours to Uganda. The wetland is home to over 260 bird species which makes it a special place for birding.

While on a safari in this wetland, travelers have the opportunity to track many birds. Birding at Mabamba Wetland is done in the morning hours of the day. The bird species in this area include waterfowl, raptors, African fishing eagles, African fire finch, African green pigeons, common sandpiper, brown parrots, cattle Egret, Grey parrots, and many others. Travelers on their Uganda safari may decide to do a 1 day Mabamba Wetland tour for an exceptional birding experience since the area is near the Entebbe International Airport.

Canoe rides

The canoe rides or canoe safaris are also done within the area where travelers on their Uganda safari tend to have the opportunity to see the natural habitats in the area. These canoe rides are usually done in the tight channels of the swamp where you will have to track some bird species and animals. The animals that are usually tracked include the sitatunga which are the swamp antelopes living in the area. And they have reduced in number due to poaching by the natives. Also, some reptiles are sited within the swamp.

Accommodation facilities in the Mabamba Wetland

Travelers on their Uganda safari to the Mabamba wetland usually choose to stay in Entebbe on their safari to Uganda since the facilities within the wetland are less compared to those in Entebbe. There are also campsites for travelers on their Uganda safari who usually wish to stay near the wetland. They are usually recommended to have waterproof equipment due to the rains. Some of the facilities include the Mabamba Lodge overlooking the wetland and the forest is an eco-lodge found in the area. The other facilities are found in Entebbe. They include; the Nkima Lodge, Via via Hotel, Red Chilli Lodge, Green Valley Resort, and many others.

What is the best time to visit the Mabamba wetland?

Mabamba wetland is one of the destinations that is near the airport in Uganda. The wetland is usually visited throughout the year. And the best time to visit the wetland is during the dry months of the year that is to say December to February and June to September. During these months, the area is dry and has open vegetation where you can have the opportunity to site the attractions within the area. On the other hand, during the wet months of the year, the wetland is also available for tourism. But less wildlife is seen due to thick vegetation, and large water volumes. The other opportunity you have during the wet season is that there is less traffic and a high chance of getting a more personalized experience.

How to get there?

While on the safari to the Mabamba wetland, travelers can choose from either water or road transport. When using water, travelers on their Uganda safari will use a ferry on Lake Victoria. They sail to Kasenge village in the northern part of Lake Victoria. Upon arrival in the village, they proceed to the wetland for their excursion. This water transport is one of the fastest ways to reach the sanctuary in time. Alternatively, by road, you will have a 2-hour drive through the old Entebbe Road to Kisubi, Nakawuka Village. Then proceed to Kasenge Village where the wetland is located. This kind of transport means is somewhat longer and at times tiresome. The Mabamba wetland offers a one-day or half-day excursion to travelers on their Uganda safari since it is near the Entebbe International Airport. Book yours now and enjoy an exceptional birding experience on a Uganda trip.

The community is located north and northwest of the reserve. It is for the Batuku, who are usually called the Batooro Bahuma. They are mainly pastoralists living in the Semuliki flat plains. They are also considered descendants of the Abarusula, who were the army of Bunyoro during the reign of the Omukama Kabale. This community offers travelers on their Uganda safari the opportunity to enjoy locally made cattle products.

Ntoroko fishing community

Kasesenge kyakabaseke community

The community is located in the eastern part of the reserve and is mainly comprised of Bakiga migrants who were tea estate workers in the 1960s. This community primarily grew tea, but when the price decreased, they stopped growing tea and started cultivating other crops like bananas, beans, maize, and many others. This community usually trades much for foodstuffs with the Ntoroko and the Rwebisengo communities.

What do you do while in the Tooro Semuliki wildlife reserve?

The game drive in the reserve is usually done in the morning, afternoon, and night in the three savannah tracks of the reserve.

Kabwoya Wildlife Reserve

The Kabwoya Wildlife Reserve is located in the northwestern part of Uganda in the Hoima district. It was gazette in 1980, it later became a wildlife reserve in 2002. Kabwoya Wildlife Reserve is about 87 square miles in size. The reserve was first set up in 1963 as a controlled hunting area and conservation area at Kaiso-Tonya Conservation Centre. This is near Lake Albert, Murchison Falls National Park, and Tooro Semuliki Game Reserve to handle the migrating wildlife.

Due to increased poaching in 1982, the wildlife in this area was reduced. And there came a competition for the cattle keepers who also started competing for the land.

Fort Portal City

Fort Portal City is situated in western Uganda, in the Kabarole District, at the northern base of the Rwenzori Mountains. It is the only city in Uganda that has an English name, and it is the tourism city of Uganda. The city’s name originates from the colonial time of the British in Uganda. Sir Gerald Portal, a colonial master, was living in Uganda in the 1980s. Fort Portal was named after him since he stayed in the area.

The city is dominated by the Batooro, whose kingdom is the most prominent tribe in the town, and their palace is situated within the city. Initially, it was called Kabarole, meaning “Let them see” in the Rutooro. The city is majorly under the Tooro kingdom, which the Omukama Oyo heads. Fort Portal City has the best stunning views of the Rwenzori Mountains.

What to see in Fort Portal City?

Fort Portal City, also known as the tourism capital of Uganda, offers multiple tourist attractions to explore during a Uganda safari. These attractions include;

Kibale National Park

The Kibale National Park is located near Fort Portal City, with one of the coolest atmospheres. The park is famous for chimpanzee trekking, which is done within the Kibale forest. The park is also home to 12 other primates and 372 bird species, making it a birders’ haven for tourists on a Uganda safari. Kibale is also accessible via the Kampala-Mubende-Fort Portal Highway. This becomes a fantastic destination for a traveller on a Uganda safari to Fort Portal City.

Tooro Kingdom Palace

The Tooro Palace is located within Fort Portal City, with a captivating view of the city from Karuzika Hill, which was built in 1960. It was refurbished in 2005 with modern designs to follow the new trends in the world, with support from international and local friends. The kingdom was fully restored in 1993 by the current ruling government, following Obote’s 1980 abolition of all kingdoms in Uganda.

Amabere caves

These caves are 5 miles away from Fort Portal City, and they were initially called Nyakasura Caves. These are referred to as the breasts of the mother of Mwiru. She believed that her breasts were cut off by her dad, who was the king. He did it to make her unattractive to men so that she would not give birth to a bastard who would kill her. So, the Bukuku, the gatekeeper of the king, had to hide her in the caves. During your visit to these caves, you will also have the opportunity to see the Nyakasura Falls and hike to the summit for breathtaking views of Lake Saka and Lake Kigere.

Semuliki National Park

While on your Uganda safari to Fort Portal City, Semuliki National Park is one of the bucket list destinations to visit. This park is home to over 53 mammal species and 442 bird species.

Kampala City

Kampala is the capital and oldest city in Uganda. It is located within the central region, neighboring Lake Victoria. Lake Victoria is one of the largest freshwater lakes in Africa. It is one of the best cities to live in and one of the fastest-growing cities in Africa. Kampala is one of the administrative cities that is made up of several hills. It derives its name from the Luganda word” Akasozi k’empala’’ which means the mountain of impalas. In the 18th century, Kampala was a grazing yard for impalas.

This city was an administrative center for the colonialists during the colonial time since they first arrived in the Buganda region. Later, the administrative center was transferred to Entebbe in 1905 after constructing the Entebbe airport, which is about 45 kilometers from Kampala city center.

This city of several hills is administered by the Kampala City Council Authority (KCCA), a government body that ensures the’ proper and smooth running of daily activities.

The climate of Kampala City

Kampala’s climate is unique. It is tropical and characterized by two rainy seasons and two dry seasons. The city experiences heavy rainfall in April, May, and November, while the rest of the year is marked by abundant sunshine. However, the rainfall is unpredictable, occurring throughout the year and often leading to flooding in the city’s downtown area.

An Administrative Hub

Kampala, now Uganda’s administrative and commercial city, has a parliament, state house, and government ministries for administration. The city also has over 25 commercial banks for economic development. It also has several hospitals, malls, and local markets for fresh fruits. Kampala is divided into the Rubaga, Nakawa, Mengo, and Kira Divisions. The town is approximately 45 kilometers away from the Entebbe International Airport. It can be accessed by road by driving 45 to 55 minutes, depending on the traffic.

Every 3rd June, the Uganda martyrs are usually remembered and celebrated at this shrine in Namugongo. Travelers on their Uganda safari can visit this shrine at any time of the year.

It also has scenic views of Lake Victoria. This lake is 200 feet deep and was made during the regime of Sekabaka Mwanga 2.
