The cost of chimpanzee trekking permits in Uganda varies by location. Each trekking destination has its rate for purchasing a valid permit. This article guides how and where to buy chimpanzee trekking permits in Uganda, the pricing, popular chimpanzee safari locations, the ideal visiting times, packing suggestions, accommodation options, accessibility, and any additional information to help ensure successful trip planning.
Where to buy chimpanzee trekking permits in Uganda
Chimpanzee trekking permits in Uganda are granted by the Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA), which was established in 1996 to manage wildlife in protected areas for the benefit of Ugandans and the international community. UWA is also authorized to collect fees for its services, licenses, rights, and other permits it provides.
UWA provides chimpanzee permits to tour operators, allowing tourists to purchase them for trips to see chimpanzees in Uganda. These permits are specifically available for prominent locations such as Kibale National Park and Kyambura Gorge in Queen Elizabeth National Park.
Chimpanzee communities, accustomed to human presence, are abundant in protected areas managed by UWA, particularly in key tracking regions like Kanyanchu, Buraiga, and Kyambura. The prospect of encountering these fascinating creatures is a thrilling part of the trekking experience. Obtaining a chimpanzee trekking permit is crucial; individuals caught tracking from unauthorized entry points without UWA guides, the necessary ticket/permit, or proof of payment may face arrest and prosecution.
How to purchase trekking permits for chimpanzee tracking in Uganda
In Uganda, chimp trekking permits are available through a reputable and licensed tour operator like Native Africa Tours. Please get in touch with our reservation team with your planned trekking dates, destination, the number of permits needed, and your details (names), among other information.
Native Africa Tours can obtain a chimp permit on your behalf without your physical presence. Our team will contact the UWA reservation staff to check permit availability and let you know. If a chimp permit or trekking slots suit your travel plans, we can reserve them in the UWA booking system. Payment is necessary and should be made as UWA instructed.
According to Uganda Wildlife Authority guidelines, visitors must pay the full amount for chimp permits for bookings made within six months.
A deposit of 50% of the total cost is required upon booking permits at least 6 months in advance. The remaining balance for the chimp permit must be paid 90 days before the trekking dates.
A visitor has only one free reschedule; otherwise, a 25% surcharge may apply to the original cost of the chimp permit if you make more than one.
Reschedules should occur within a year of the initial booking date.
When rescheduling, refunds are not provided for other paid safari activities. Fees for a specific activity cannot be applied to different tourism activities. Swapping a chimp trekking permit for a chimpanzee habituation permit is also impossible.
