Rwanda Gorilla Trekking in June

Rwanda Gorilla Trekking in June is another incredible experience that has defied the odds. Back in history, to the colonial days, Rwanda was a deep center of tension. However, this tension was ignited by discrimination in 1994, and it broke out of control. The Hutus turned to militias in a bid to racially cleanse their fellow countrymen, the Tutsis. This was immediately after the death of their President Juvenile Habyarimana, who was a Hutu. In a space of 100 days, the Hutu militias killed over a million Tutsis in what was termed the 1994 Rwanda Genocide. Although the country went through this tragic time, it has emerged stronger and better than ever. This is why among the leading gorilla trekking adventure nations, Rwanda is on this list.

Gorilla trekking is a tourist activity that focuses on encountering wild, endangered mountain gorillas in their natural environments. Why endangered, you may ask? Well, the mountain gorillas are considered endangered because, in their entire world, they are only located in one region. Their numbers are very few compared to most of the other primate species. The only place to encounter mountain gorillas in the world is in the Virunga Conservation Area. This area is located in the East African region, stretching from the Virunga National Park of the Democratic Republic of Congo through Uganda’s two iconic parks, Bwindi Impenetrable and Mgahinga Gorilla National Parks, and then to Rwanda’s Volcanoes National Park. Our major concern here is Rwanda’s Volcanoes National Park and its exclusive gorilla trekking experiences.

Gorilla Trekking in Volcanoes National Park

June being a dry season means that the gorilla trekking experience in this month will be a seamless one, offering clear views of nature and the primates. As always, gorilla trekking begins with a pre-trekking briefing that recites the rules and regulations of gorilla trekking. These rules are meant to prepare you for what you are to encounter and also keep you safe. Keep in mind the mountain gorillas; however much they share with us over 98% DNA, they are still wild and can be unpredictable. Therefore, these rules and regulations prepare for what you should and shouldn’t do in the presence of the mountain gorillas, or what is termed the expected code of conduct.

During the Gorilla Trekking Experience

After the briefing is done, visitors are grouped into categories of 8 people and assigned a gorilla family to trek. The limited number of 8 is put as the maximum number of visitors to trek a gorilla family per day. This is done not to stress out the mountain gorillas by invading their space and privacy; thus, it is done once. It is also important to note that these primates are wild, and large numbers of people can frighten them to flee or become aggressive as the number can seem to be a threat.

In the guidance and leadership of a guide, you head into the forests of Volcanoes National Park to search for the mountain gorillas. These primates live in a group called a gorilla family. Each group of 8 visitors is allocated to a certain gorilla family. The trekking adventure experience usually lasts for about 4-5 hours until the gorilla family is sighted. Visitors are thereafter given an hour to spend as they interact with their wild cousins. They watch these primates as they take their daily tasks. These tasks include feeding, playing, resting, and females grooming their young. These epi hours spent with these mountain gorillas in their natural habitat, bless you with an incredible experience you can never find anywhere else, not even in a zoo. The clear blue sky, navigable tracking trails, and sparse vegetation, all thanks to June, add a touch of color and coolness to this experience.
