Uganda stands out as a premier destination for gorilla trekking in Africa. A tour in Uganda offers an exhilarating experience with rare mountain gorillas in their natural habitat. Tourists can choose between Bwindi and Mgahinga National Parks, which offer many visitors the opportunity to trek with these magnificent creatures.
Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, located in Southwestern Uganda, features four primary sectors for gorilla tracking: Buhoma, Ruhija, Rushaga, and Buhoma region. Each area hosts habituated gorilla families, and visitors are assigned a specific group based on their gorilla trekking permit.
Mgahinga National Park, located in Kisoro, Southwestern Uganda, features just one habituated gorilla family available for tourism. The Nyakagezi group is the sole group visitors can track in Mgahinga Gorilla National Park.

Typically, a gorilla trek lasts between 2 and 6 hours. This trek includes navigating through the lush rainforest alongside an experienced guide in pursuit of a group of mountain gorillas. Once you locate a family of mountain gorillas at the trek’s conclusion, you can anticipate up to one hour of close-up viewing and photography. Enjoy observing the gorillas’ behaviors and the unique body language these apes exhibit.
When should you visit Uganda for gorilla trekking tours?
Tourists looking to encounter mountain gorillas in Uganda can schedule and reserve a gorilla tour anytime throughout the year. We suggest planning your gorilla tour during the peak dry season to avoid difficulties in the jungles. The longer dry season spans from June to September, while the shorter dry season runs from December to February. Keep in mind that Uganda is a year-round destination, and due to its climatic conditions, it’s feasible to arrange a tour to Bwindi or Mgahinga even during the wet or rainy seasons.
