What to expect on a VIP Gorilla Trekking experience in Rwanda
Luxury accommodation
Nowhere around the gorilla trekking safari destinations has better luxury lodging than Rwanda’s Volcanoes National Park. From the sophisticated safari lodges to the high-end Tented Camps, primate enthusiasts are spoiled for choice. Most of these accommodation facilities cater to adults, romantic getaways for honeymooners, and family gorilla trekking tours. The properties are replete with playrooms and babysitting services.
Rather than a Tented Camp, in Volcanoes National Park, you will predominantly find safari lodges with solid walls and huge floor-to-ceiling glass windows that boast jaw-dropping views of the surroundings. They also feature air-conditioning as well as heat for added comfort, considering the cold weather in the area. That said, if you wish to experience luxury accommodation during Rwanda VIP Gorilla Trekking, we recommend One & Only Gorilla’s Nest, Singita Kwitonda Lodge, Bisate Lodge, Virunga Lodge, Amakoro Songa Lodge, and Sabyinyo Silverback Lodge.
Exclusive/Private Gorilla Trekking Experience
Each gorilla safari or tour we deign is bespoke. As Native Africa Tours, we pride ourselves on offering our clients access to exclusive experiences tailored to the nature of the trip that resonate with everyone. In Rwanda, this might include private trekking, venturing out with a private guide to meet face to face with the majestic Giant Apes.
For the VIP gorilla trekking experience, we recommend the exclusive visit to a habituated gorilla family. For any habituated gorilla family in Volcanoes National Park, the number of visitors allowed to track is limited to 8 persons. However, for the exclusive/private gorilla trekking option, you can decide to have the entire family to yourself (minimum of 1, but with a maximum of 8 persons).
Unlike the normal gorilla trekking experiences where you will be tracking with seven other people (who are sometimes strangers), you can choose to be with seven other people whom you’re familiar with (it can be friends, family, or colleagues). It’s your choice if you don’t exceed the threshold of eight people. This experience costs $15000. It provides an exclusive visit to one of the 12 habituated gorilla families. It also comes with private guiding services. One must book it well in advance (since you will be booking a whole gorilla family for the once-in-a-lifetime experience). With fewer people visiting a particular gorilla family, the jungle feels wider and secluded. And isn’t that the way you envisioned your dream VIP gorilla Trekking experience in Rwanda?
Seasoned guides
Volcanoes National Park’s rangers, guides, and trackers undergo rigorous training. While on your VIP gorilla trekking adventure, you will be constantly impressed by their depth of the mountain gorilla and the natural habitat’s knowledge, as well as other residents of the Park. While on your gorilla trekking adventures, you will always be guided by experts, hence unforgettable experiences that will last a lifetime. Prepare to be awed!
Aside from the Ranger guides who are knowledge encyclopedia for the mountain gorillas, there are also the armed escorts during gorilla trekking experiences. These keep visitors safe from stray animals such as elephants, leopards, and others that are likely to charge during your gorilla trekking adventure. Therefore, don’t be scared to see an armed person following behind it. The gun is for scaring away the stray animals as you go about your seamless gorilla trekking experience in the land of a thousand hills.

Porter service when required
Hiring a porter is another way to enjoy a VIP Gorilla Trekking experience in Rwanda. This is how. Gorilla trekking is generally a physically demanding experience. It requires walking for several hours through varying terrains before the allotted gorilla family is located. It also involves crossing streams in some places, stumbling on rocky areas. This is where a porter/s is helpful. They provide the much-needed physical and mental support. They also carry your backpack and camera equipment.
Additionally, hiring a porter not only eases your gorilla trekking experience but also is an indirect way to promote conservation of mountain gorillas. Additionally, it contributes to community development/empowerment. The majority of porters were formerly poachers. They are now looking for legit ways of earning a living and supporting their families. Hiring a porter at only $20 per person (without tips, which aren’t mandatory but recommended) means a child/children are sent to school, and a family will afford decent housing, medical care, and clean water.
When to go for our VIP Gorilla Trekking experience in Rwanda
The season you choose for your VIP Gorilla Trekking tour affects both prices and the quality of your safari experience. The year is divided into three main safari seasons. The Peak season- June to October is perfect for gorilla trekking. Forest trails are drier and reduced chance of rain showers. However, the demand for gorilla permits and accommodation is high. Hence, you might have issues with availability on certain dates.
The shoulder season- December to February experiences lower prices. The Low season is typically during the rainy months- March, April, and May. This is the cheapest time to enjoy VIP Gorilla trekking in Rwanda. But gorilla treks can be more challenging due to muddy and slippery forest trails.
