Nyiragongo Volcano is one of the eight chains of the Virunga Mountains dotted within Congo, Rwanda, and Uganda. It is the most active of all with multiple eruptions and straddles at 3470 meters in the Southern sector of Virunga.
Nyiragongo contains one of the world’s largest Lava Lakes, also known as a boiling magma Lake. Its Crater measures 2 km, and at the summit, overnight stays are in the Nyiragongo summit shelters.
Virunga National Park is Congo’s iconic attraction and destination, holding not only Nyiragongo Volcano but also important wildlife. The 7800 sq. km park, established in 1925, is home to rare mountain gorillas, elephants, lions, bongo antelopes, chimps, 700 bird species, and more. Your hiking trip will begin and end in Kigali, Rwanda. Below is the detailed 3-day Nyiragongo Hike safari itinerary.
Day 1: Your adventure begins with a comfortable hotel pick-up. You’ll then enjoy a Kigali city tour, taking in the sights and sounds of this vibrant city, before embarking on the drive to Congo.
Pick up at the hotel and start the 3-Day tour with a Kigali city tour, which includes visiting essential sites within the city. Kigali is small in size, unlike other African cities. Today, you will visit the Kigali Memorial Center, local markets, and others. Alternatively, you may visit the Ntamatta Church. Here, you will see the remains of those who succumbed to the 1994 genocide. You will leave Kigali for Congo through the Goma border and enjoy the scenic beauty of Rwanda and DR. Congo. Arrive early at the Goma border for clearing at the immigration offices and ensure your Congo Visa is in the system. You can obtain a Congo Visa either in advance from the embassy or on arrival at the border. Don’t forget to carry a yellow fever card and a valid passport.
Day 2: Begin the hike to the top of Nyiragongo Volcano (3470 m)
Have breakfast, and afterward, you will report to a briefing area for registration and get insight into some of the guidelines to follow. You can set off from Kibati with a porter helping you in carrying heavy luggage and a guide in the lead. The hike takes 4 to 5 hours, including navigating the forest around the lower slopes. Here, some small primates, flora, and birds will be spotted. As you head to the top, you will be amazed by the unique landscape. These include the Goma town, the Rwenzori Mountain ranges, the Virunga National Park, Lake Kivu & Kahuzi-Biega NP. At night, while at the summit shelters, you will have a memorable experience as you watch the boiling magma lake as it glows. The summit shelters are basic but comfortable, providing a unique opportunity to spend the night on the volcano.
Day 3: Descend to Kibati & transfer back to Kigali
Breakfast at leisure, and after, begin descending to where the briefing was done the previous day. Meet the driver guide for transfer back to Rwanda to be dropped off at the hotel for relaxation. This will mark the end of your amazing 3 Days Nyiragongo Hike.
