Day 1: Transfer to Bwindi Impenetrable National Park (Equator Experience)
The moment you’ve been waiting for has finally arrived. This is when your Ugandan safari begins. After a few brief formalities and an introduction to your guide, we’ll start this journey together and begin to discover all of the amazing animals Uganda has to offer. The capital of Uganda, Kampala, derives its name from a local phrase meaning Hill of Antelopes. You won’t find any antelope here today, but rather a rapidly growing city whose high-rise center ranks among the most important economic hubs in East Africa, with a varied culinary scene and nightlife. During your drive to western Uganda, you will make a stop at the Equator and take photos.
Day 2: Mountain Gorilla Trekking, Batwa Community Tour, and Transfer to Lake Bunyonyi
Supporting almost half the world’s mountain gorillas, Bwindi Impenetrable National Park is arguably the best place anywhere in the world to track these charismatic, gentle giants through their misty forest home. But there is far more to this UNESCO World Heritage Site than just gorillas. The lush forest interior is also home to a diversity of other mammals, ranging from L’Hoest’s monkey and chimpanzee to elephant and the yellow-backed duiker. A total of 350 bird species, 23 of which are unique to the Albertine Rift Valley, ensure that Bwindi ranks among East Africa’s most rewarding bird-watching destinations. Day 3: Explore Lake Bunyonyi and Transfer to Mgahinga National Park
Dammed by a lava flow 8,000 years ago, Bunyonyi is a flooded river valley that extends for 25km from north to south but is nowhere more than 5km wide. The absence of hippos and crocodiles means swimming is safe. It has also resulted in an unusually dense population of otters, which are often seen from the shore. A great beach chill-out destination, Bunyonyi also offers plenty of walking and kayaking opportunities to keep active travelers busy.
Day 4: Mountain Gorilla Trekking in Mgahinga Gorilla National Park
Prepare to be blown away by the scenery when you arrive at Mgahinga Gorilla National Park. Towering 2,000m above you, the distinctive volcanic outlines of Muhabura, Gahinga, and Sabyinyo form part of the Virunga Mountains, Africa’s sixth-highest range. Look back along the approach road from Kisoro, and you’ll be treated to a grandstand view over lakes Mutanda and Mulehe. Within the park boundaries, bamboo thickets and rainforest protect some of the world’s last remaining mountain gorillas, as well as the localized golden monkey. After breakfast, you will hit the road to Kigali via Cyanika border. Lunch will be in Kigali. Depending on your flight schedule, you may do an optional city tour. This is a chance to visit the Kigali Genocide Memorial Museum and local markets. The driver-guide will then take you to the airport for an outbound flight.
