9 Days Kenya Wildlife and Beach Safari

Detailed Itinerary

Day 1: Transfer from Nairobi to Amboseli National Park

You’ve been dreaming of your safari for so long, and now it’s finally about to begin. You’ll meet your guide, who will tell you everything you need to know to get your safari started. We’re as excited as you are to get your trip underway. Nairobi could just be East Africa’s most exciting city, thanks to its buzzing nightlife, well-regarded restaurant scene, and excellent shopping. And it’s more than just a gateway to the safari parks elsewhere in the country. Nairobi also has stellar wildlife and other attractions that make it worth visiting quite apart from exploring further afield.

Evening game drive in Amboseli National Park. You’ll enjoy taking photos of big elephants with Mt Kilimanjaro (5895m) in the background here in Amboseli. You might also see lion, cheetah, zebra, buffalo, giraffe, hyena, wildebeest, and many of the 420 bird species that have been recorded here.

Day 2: Full day in Amboseli National Park

Spend a full day exploring the breathtaking Amboseli National Park, renowned for its large herds of elephants and stunning views of Mount Kilimanjaro, Africa’s highest peak. Your day begins with an early morning game drive, the best time to spot a variety of wildlife, including lions, cheetahs, giraffes, buffalo, zebras, and numerous bird species. Enjoy a picnic lunch or a hot meal at your lodge or a designated picnic site within the park. In the afternoon, continue your safari adventure through the park’s diverse landscapes—open plains, acacia woodlands, and swamps fed by underground springs from Kilimanjaro. Capture iconic photos of wildlife silhouetted against the majestic mountain before heading back to your lodge for a relaxing evening.

Day 3: Transfer to Tsavo West National Park (En-route game drive)

Tsavo West is a legendary Kenyan park, known for its wild backcountry, famous lions, endangered rhinos, beautiful scenery, and elephants with a reddish hue from taking mud baths in the red Tsavo dust. It’s a fantastic park to explore, and you’ll probably also see hippo, buffalo, hyena, wildebeest, zebra, and giraffe while you’re here. Keep an eye out for leopards too. The birding is first-class, with over 400 different species recorded. Many of the male lions here don’t have manes.

Evening Game Drive, Tsavo West National Park: You’ll love the warm light and cooler temperatures as we take you out to explore on your evening game drive. This time of day is when both predators and prey are most active, and it can feel as though anything could happen at any moment. This is when you’ll most enjoy being on safari.

Day 4: Transfer to Tsavo East National Park (En-route game drive)

Tsavo East National Park offers you so much that you can’t get in other Kenyan parks. These include maneless male lions, elephants coated in red dust, wild, croc-filled rivers in a remote and barren landscape, and even the prized and super-rare hirola antelope. Other wildlife prizes you might see include the gerenuk, cheetah, and the Somali ostrich. Or a sizeable proportion of the over 500 different bird species known to frequent the park. Tsavo East’s varied landscapes also add much personality to your visit.

Evening Game Drive, Tsavo East National Park: Going on an evening game drive is one of the highlights of any safari. This is when temperatures cool, the light becomes softer, and the wildlife begins to get active. Not only will you be out when the light is best for taking photos, but it’s also one of the best times of day for seeing the animals.

Day 5: Transfer from Tsavo East to Diani by Train

After your morning game drive or breakfast at the lodge in Tsavo East National Park, you’ll be transferred to the Voi Railway Station to board the standard gauge train to Mombasa. Enjoy a comfortable and scenic journey through Kenya’s countryside, with chances to spot wildlife along the way. Upon arrival at Mombasa Terminus, a driver will meet you and transfer you by road to your beach resort in Diani. The road transfer includes a ferry crossing at Likoni, giving you a glimpse of the coastal life before arriving at the stunning white sands of Diani Beach for the next part of your safari—relaxation by the Indian Ocean.

Day 6: Full day at Diani Beach

You’ll find it’s easy to fall in love with Diani Beach, one of Kenya’s most beautiful beaches. Pristine sands backed by palm forests make this one of our favorite spots along the Indian Ocean coast, and there are coral mosques, a monkey sanctuary, and a cool beachside vibe to go with the fabulous views.

Day 7: Excursion to Kisite Island – Swim with Dolphins & Snorkeling Adventure

Set out on an exciting full-day excursion to Kisite-Mpunguti Marine Park, one of Kenya’s premier snorkeling and marine wildlife destinations. Depart from Diani in the morning and head to Shimoni, where you’ll board a traditional dhow boat for a scenic sail through the crystal-clear waters of the Indian Ocean. Along the way, keep an eye out for playful dolphins. If you’re lucky, you’ll have the incredible opportunity to swim alongside them in their natural habitat.

Once at Kisite Island, dive into the vibrant underwater world with guided snorkeling over pristine coral reefs teeming with colorful fish, sea turtles, and other marine life. After your water activities, enjoy a delicious Swahili-style seafood lunch on Wasini Island. This is followed by a relaxed stroll through the local village or optional visits to the coral gardens and slave caves. Return to Diani in the late afternoon, refreshed and inspired by your day in paradise.

Day 8: Full Day at the Beach – Relaxation & Leisure on the Indian Ocean

After days of thrilling safari adventures, unwind with a full day of relaxation on the beautiful shores of Diani Beach. Spend your day soaking up the sun on soft white sands, swimming in the warm turquoise waters of the Indian Ocean, or simply lounging under a palm tree with a refreshing drink in hand.

For the more adventurous, optional water activities like jet skiing, paddle boarding, or kite surfing are available. You may also choose to indulge in a beachside massage or explore nearby beach cafés and local shops. Whether you’re looking to relax, explore, or enjoy a bit of both, this beach day is the perfect way to recharge and enjoy Kenya’s stunning coastal charm at your own pace.

Day 9: Catch a Train to Nairobi

After enjoying your time on the coast, you’ll be transferred to Mombasa Terminus to board the standard gauge train to Nairobi. Travel comfortably through Kenya’s diverse landscapes as you head back to the capital. With multiple departure times available, you can choose a train that fits your schedule and arrives in Nairobi at your convenience. Upon arrival, you’ll be met at the station and transferred to your hotel or onward destination. This marks the end of your 9 Days Kenya Wildlife and Beach Safari. As your safari comes to an end, we look back on our time together and the wonderful safari memories that we’ve shared. It’s been an amazing journey. Although we say goodbye as your tour ends, we look forward to welcoming you back with us again one day.
