Some of these rivers are located all around the areas covered by the Rwenzori ranges. Rain and snowfall occur around the mountain ranges. The ice and snow melt, and as they flow from the southern Rwenzori Mountains, they form different rivers.

Some of these rivers include the following:

River Nyamwamba

This is one of the major rivers that flow from Mount Rwenzori, passing through Kasese Town and Kilembe Town, which are located at the foothills of the mountain. It drains into Lake George, situated within the Albertine Rift Valley, and is connected to the Kazinga Channel. River Nyamwamba is notorious for flooding during heavy rains, destroying people’s properties, roads, Kilembe Hospital, and more.

River Mubuku

This river is also situated in the foothills of the Rwenzori ranges and is used for electricity generation, agriculture, and tourism. It is located on the eastern side of the mountain ranges and flows through the Mubuku trading center in the Kasese District. This river has a tributary called the River Sebwe, which supplies water to the Mubuku irrigation scheme. Several hydropower dams along the Mubuku River are used for electricity generation. This river also flows into Lake George.

River Rwimi

This river flows through the southern part of Mount Rwenzori, forming a natural boundary between Kasese and Bunyangabu District. It flows through the town of Rwimi and discharges its waters into Lake George.

River Lamia

River Lamia is smaller than the other rivers and flows within the Semuliki Valley in the Bundibugyo District. It flows through the northwestern slopes of Mount Rwenzori. It runs through Semuliki National Park within the tropical rainforest close to the border of Uganda and the Democratic Republic of Congo. This river pours its waters into the Semuliki River, which feeds Lake Albert.

Mpanga River

This river is located in western Uganda and is among the rivers flowing through Mount Rwenzori. Though it does not flow directly from the mountain, it originates near the highlands of the foothills. It flows southwest of Fort Portal City and continues to Kamwenge, Kitagwenda districts, and Kibale National Park, eventually flowing into Lake George.

Nyamugasani River

Nyamugasani River is also situated in Kasese District but is lesser-known than the other rivers in Mount Rwenzori. It flows through the Kyarumba and Kikyo villages. It is used for hydropower generation with the Nyamugasani Hydropower Dam.

Rwanoli River

Sometimes called Lwanoli or Luanoli, this is another small river that flows along the lower western or southwestern slopes of the mountain. It is not documented as thoroughly as the other rivers.

Lamia River

Lamia River is another river that flows within Mount Rwenzori in both Uganda and the Democratic Republic of Congo. This river is known for the flooding it experienced in 2020, which destroyed several properties of Ugandans and Congolese.
