Volcano climbing adventures in Uganda are a perfect way for visitors to explore highland areas of Uganda. Volcanic mountains are mountains that were formed after volcanic activity. During this activity, a gap is formed in their surface known as a vent that allows hot magma, ash, and gas to break out from the Earth’s crust. Hot magma splashes out with pressure and pours out solidifying with time to form a volcanic mountain. Uganda has several volcanic mountains at a glance scattered across its premises. These include Mount Elgon, Mount Gahinga, Mount Sabyinyo, and Mount Muhabura to mention but a few. The volcano mountains of Uganda are reasonably steep allowing a perfect challenge to visitors to test their adrenaline.

The Virunga Volcanoes are a chain of volcanic mountains in East Africa that stretch through Uganda, Rwanda, and the Democratic Republic of Congo. This entire area is known as the Virunga Conservation Area. The Virunga Mountains can easily be accessed while on a climbing safari adventure in southwestern Uganda. Mgahinga Gorilla National Park alone hosts over three volcanic mountains of the Virunga massif. The advantage of Mgahinga Gorilla National Park is you can trek gorillas, climb the volcanoes, and visit the Batwa to experience their way of life all at once.

While hiking or climbing these mountains you can encounter numerous species of flora and fauna like birds and primates. Some of the mountains to climb in Uganda include the following.

Mount Sabinyo

This mountain offers one of the best mountain climbing experiences in Uganda. A dormant volcano, Mount Sabinyo is one of the numerous rolling volcanoes that make up the magnificent Virunga mountain ranges. These mountain ranges span along the borders of Rwanda, Uganda, and the Democratic Republic of Congo.

Mount Sabinyo lies at the meeting point of all three borders and is more the axis of the Virunga range and offers the best views across the Virunga conservation area. Mount Sabinyo is located within Mgahinga Gorilla National Park in the southwestern of Uganda. Sabinyo is a local term for ‘Old man’s teeth’ signifying the mountain’s peaks which look like the old man’s spaced teeth. The extremely rugged nature of the terrain along the Sabinyo’s slopes which has many craters with sharp ridges makes it extremely hard to climb in two countries Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of Congo. 

However, in Uganda, it is safe as measures were put in place to handle the challenging trail including climbing trails to assist climbers at a very steep section. Hiking activities set off from the park office after a meeting and briefing by a ranger guide. Walking sticks are provided. You go through vegetation zones.. From the bamboo zone (2400-2800 meters) you can meet golden monkeys. You can as well meet other wildlife in the park like buffaloes, and elephants. At the summit, you hike each of the three summits and get the chance to be at the meeting point of all the countries and enjoy the best views.

Rain gear, hiking shoes, garden gloves for cold weather at the top, long-sleeved shirt, and trousers to protect from itchy plants.

Mount Muhabura

This is one of the active volcanoes in the Virunga Mountains on the Uganda-Rwanda border. It stands at 4,127 meters above sea level. Reaching Mount Muhabura is both by road and air transport.  From Kampala, the drive takes 8 hours to Kisoro through Kabale. Muhabura is a term in the local language that means to. It is characterized by a funnel-shaped volcano with ash and other related materials on the slopes. Mount Muhabura gives the possibility of viewing rare bird species and mammals like buffaloes, and elephants.

Mount Muhabura is the most strenuous volcano to hike, resident guide from Uganda Wildlife Authority will lead you to Ntebeko visitor center. Climbing Mount Muhabura starts at 7 am and takes about 7 hours before heading to the head trail. If you moving with heavy luggage porters are available for hire at the foot of the mountain. During briefing the guide will scan to see if hikers have certain gear for climbing such as hiking boots, the right clothes, walking sticks, and packed lunch to mention but a few.

Mount Gahinga

Mount Gahinga is one of the eight volcanoes found within the Virunga ranges of mountains that are shared by Uganda and Rwanda. The mountain lies in Mgahinga Gorilla National Park and is the smallest of the three volcanoes in this pack. The name Gahinga is a small pile of stones around the mountain in the local language. Gahinga Mountain has slopes with bamboo and subalpine, bamboo is a staple food to primates such as the mountain gorillas, baboons, and black and white colobus monkeys.

Hiking Mount Gahinga is easy, however, one to be needs fit to complete the hike. It takes about 6 hours to complete the hike. Hiking adventures starts at 7 am with a briefing at the park headquarters with a park ranger. The ranger will share information about the mountain and its history. More so, hikers will be informed about the nature of the hike, how to prepare for the hike, and given a free hiking stick.  At the summit, one can gaze at the distant volcanoes in the Virunga ranges. Climbing down is easy but one needs to exercise awareness when descending the trails to avoid falling.

Mount Elgon

Found in eastern Uganda on the border with Kenya, Mount Elgon is shared by both Kenya and Uganda. However, the mountain’s peak is in Uganda and the biggest base. Climbing Mount Elgon takes about 3-6 days. Additionally, you can do day hikes and slope down the hiking trails on a bike. The mountain’s cool heights offer a break from the hot plains underneath with the higher altitudes providing an oasis for flora and fauna. The mountain is home to a variety of fauna species. Some of these include about 300 bird species. For example, apalis, black-shouldered kite, and tacazze sunbird, wildlife such as monkeys, elephants, buffaloes, oribi, duiker, waterbuck, and spotted hyenas can be sighted.

Mount Moroto

Located in eastern Uganda in the remote area of Karamoja region, Mount Moroto is in the capital of Karamoja Moroto town which is an axis above Mount Moroto and can be climbed in a day. Mount Moroto is a whipped tourist track like other places in this remote region. The climbing and hike combine the natural surroundings and local culture making it extra special.
