Plan your gorilla safari with us

As you plan to book us a gorilla permit, let us first feed you in on what a gorilla permit is, where it is used, and for what purpose. To answer all these questions we start with the basics of this topic, mountain gorillas. East Africa does not seem to stop with exciting and memorable wonders. The Virunga conservation area located in the East African region is one of the places that calls for attention because of its importance. This conservation area is the only place in the world that inhabits mountain gorillas. It is for this reason that mountain gorillas are considered endangered species by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN).

The Virunga conservation area covers three countries’ protected areas. These are the Volcanoes National Park of Rwanda. Bwindi Impenetrable and Mgahinga Gorilla National Parks of Uganda. And the Democratic Republic of Congo’s Virunga National Park. These national parks harbor the remaining population of mountain gorillas. The mountainous terrain of the Virunga conservation area makes it an ideal habitat for these primates since they dwell in a mountainous region hence their name mountain gorillas.

Gorilla permits

Encountering these mountain gorillas in their habitats is one of the highly sought-after activities in the region. Gorilla trekking involves maneuvering the dense vegetation. And steep terrain to get a one-on-one experience for an hour with the mountain gorillas. This activity of gorilla trekking requires one to present a gorilla permit to the park officials before heading out to trek. A gorilla permit can only be obtained through a trusted tour operator like Native Africa Tours, who purchases the permit on your behalf from the Uganda Wildlife Authority. The price of a gorilla permit varies from nationality to region where the visitor resides. Each gorilla destination in the Virunga conservation area has its costs for the gorilla permits, as unmasked below.

Volcanoes National Park

Located in the northern region of Rwanda, Volcanoes National Park is the country’s most popular park. It was gazette in 1925, making it the oldest park in the land. It stretches for over 160 square kilometers housing over 300 mountain gorillas. These mountain gorillas live in over 13 gorilla families however only 10 are habituated and ready for trekking. A gorilla trekking permit costs USD 1,500 for foreign non-residents, USD 500 for foreign residents, and East Africans including Rwandans pay USD 200.

Virunga National Park

The Virunga National Park is the Democratic Republic of Congo’s finest treasure located in the eastern region of the country. It was also established in 1925 and hosts a reasonable population of mountain gorillas. The gorilla permit costs in the Virunga National Park range from season to season. For example, during the peak dry seasons, the gorilla permits cost USD 400, and in the low wet season, the permits go for USD 200.

Bwindi Impenetrable and Mgahinga Gorilla National Parks

These two national parks are located in the southwestern region of Uganda. They both host the endangered mountain gorillas. Bwindi hosts about 459 individuals, and Mgahinga harbors 100 mountain gorillas. Combined, they host more than half of the remaining population of mountain gorillas. Mgahinga has one gorilla family, which is habituated for trekking, whereas Bwindi has 50 families, but only 26 are habituated. A gorilla permit in Uganda costs USD 800 for foreign non-residents, USD 700 for foreign residents, and UGX 300,000 for East Africans.
