UWA introduces Giraffes to Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary
Did you know that the Uganda Wildlife Authority introduced giraffes in the Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary? Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary was established in 2005 to conserve the southern white rhinos. Though it was a private sanctuary later on the Uganda Wildlife Authority took over. By 1982, in Uganda, there were no more rhinos due to poaching and some human conflicts. The sanctuary was set to reintroduce the rhinos and also relocate them around the country. This sanctuary was established in the Nakasongola district. Currently in Uganda national parks there are no rhinos.
The rhinos in this sanctuary were imported from Kenya and the USA and they are about 6 in number. By 2010, travelers were able to see the rhinos in this sanctuary since they had increased in number. Currently, the Uganda Wildlife Authority has introduced giraffes and hartebeests to this sanctuary. The introduction of giraffes to Ziwa was carried out on 19th August 2024.
The main aim of the introduction of this wildlife is to increase biodiversity. More so, they want the number of wildlife in this area that travelers on their Uganda safaris can encounter. The giraffes established in the Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary were translocated from the Murchison Falls National Park in the northern part of the park. The main aim to translocate these wildlife is to create space for the mining of crude oil which is in the northern part of the park. The rhinos in this sanctuary have increased from 6 to about 40 in number.
What to do in the Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary?
In the Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary, there are several activities that travelers on their Uganda safaris can engage in and some of these include;
Rhino tracking
In this sanctuary, the rhinos are the major attractions that can be seen in this sanctuary and can’t be seen elsewhere in Uganda. Travelers encounter rhinos through tracking of these wildlife. Travelers track rhinos on foot and when they come across them they maintain a distance of about 6 meters. You will see them grazing in the area. During this activity, travelers will encounter and capture the best moments of these wildlife.
Birding
The Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary is home to over 350 bird species. Travelers on their Uganda safaris encounter these species either full day or half day. The birding in this area can be encountered during the canoeing around the swamps within the sanctuary or the nature walks. Bird species that are usually spotted include the blue-spotted dove, African black crake, and many others. Shoebill tracking is usually separate from this birding. During the birding, other wildlife is usually seen like the oribi, reedbucks, duikers, hartebeests, and many others.
How to access Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary to see giraffes?
The Ziwa rhino sanctuary is mainly accessed by road which is about a 3-hour drive from Kampala to the Nakasongola district in the Nakitoma district. The sanctuary is about 176 kilometers away from Kampala. Travelers on their Uganda safaris usually make stopovers to their sanctuary to view the wildlife in this sanctuary while on their safaris to the Murchison Falls National Park.

While on a Uganda safari to this sanctuary, travelers have several accommodation facilities in which they can stay in. The facilities in this sanctuary range from the midrange and budget facilities. These facilities that travelers can choose from during the safari include; Amuka Lodge which is located in the corner of the sanctuary, and campsites and guest houses are available within the sanctuary.
What is the best time to see giraffes in Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary?
The sanctuary is open to travelers throughout the year. The dry season June to September and December to February is the best time for travelers to visit the sanctuary. During this time, the area is dry and clear for the viewing of the wildlife. Also, the sanctuary can be visited in the wet season. During this season, there is less traffic in the sanctuary and travelers have more time to view the wildlife and engage in the different activities while in the sanctuary.
