Honeymoon Track in Murchison Falls National Park: Complete Guide.

The Honeymoon Track in Murchison Falls National Park is one of the lesser-known game-viewing routes in Uganda, offering travellers an opportunity to explore a quieter and less frequently visited part of one of the country’s largest protected areas. Located in the southern sector of Murchison Falls, the track passes through a mixture of woodland, bushland and open savannah, creating a different safari experience from the more famous game-drive circuits north of the Victoria Nile.

The name itself makes the route particularly interesting. The Honeymoon Track is associated with a story dating back to the 1950s, when a couple reportedly spent a night in the area, giving the route the romantic name it carries today. Despite the name, however, this is not a private honeymoon trail or a special walking route for couples. It is a wildlife game-drive track that can be explored by any visitor to Murchison Falls National Park. Its romantic reputation simply makes it an especially appealing addition to a Uganda honeymoon safari.

It was reopened after being abandoned for quite long

The route became even more significant when it was reopened in October 2015 after more than two decades of neglect. At the time, tourism activities in Murchison Falls were heavily concentrated in the northern part of the park, while the southern sector remained comparatively underdeveloped for game viewing. Reopening the Honeymoon Track was part of an effort to encourage tourism in this quieter section and give visitors another way to experience the park.

Today, the Honeymoon Track provides access to an increasingly important wildlife area. Giraffes were translocated to the southern sector in 2016, and the wider southern landscape supports Uganda kob, Jackson’s hartebeest, buffaloes, elephants, waterbuck, bushbuck, warthogs and other wildlife. Lions can also occur in the area, although, as with any wild animal sighting, there is no guarantee that visitors will encounter them on a particular drive.

For travellers who want to experience Murchison Falls beyond its most famous northern game tracks, the Honeymoon Track is therefore worth understanding. It offers a different landscape, a different atmosphere and another perspective on the enormous ecosystem surrounding the Victoria Nile.

Where Is the Honeymoon Track in Murchison Falls National Park?

The Honeymoon Track is located in the southern sector of Murchison Falls National Park, south of the Victoria Nile. This geographical position is important because the Nile divides the park into two broad wildlife-viewing environments, each with its own character.

The northern section is the side most commonly associated with classic Murchison Falls game drives. It contains extensive savannah, acacia woodland and Borassus palm landscapes, with established tracks such as Buligi and the Victoria and Albert circuits. These northern plains support large concentrations of wildlife and are often the preferred area for visitors making their first game drive in the park.

The southern sector is different. Much of the landscape is more heavily wooded, with bushland, forest patches and rolling terrain. However, there are also open savannah areas where Uganda kob and other herbivores can be found. UWA’s visitor information describes the southern part of Murchison Falls as containing considerable bush and forest, while highlighting the open savannah around the Rabongo area as part of the “Heart of Murchison.”

The Honeymoon Track is associated with this southern game-viewing network and the area around the road leading towards the Top of Murchison Falls, Sambiya and the wider Heart of Murchison. Some tourism sources describe the route as extending for about 22 kilometres, while an earlier Ugandan tourism document described the reopened road as approximately 24 kilometres from the Top of the Falls road towards the Rabongo road. For practical travel information, it is therefore best to describe the Honeymoon Track as approximately 22–24 kilometres long, depending on how the route is measured.

The map should be treated as an illustrative tourism map rather than a navigation chart, because individual game-drive routes can change according to road conditions, wildlife movements, park management and the itinerary being followed.

The Story Behind the Name Honeymoon Track

The name Honeymoon Track is one of the most unusual stories attached to any game-drive route in Uganda. The route takes its name from a story dating back to the 1950s involving a couple who reportedly spent a night in the area around Murchison Falls. Over time, the story became associated with the route and eventually gave it the name “Honeymoon Track.” Tourism sources continue to repeat this history when describing the route today.

The story is particularly appropriate given the setting. Murchison Falls is already one of Uganda’s most dramatic destinations, combining the enormous force of the Victoria Nile with extensive wilderness, wildlife and spectacular scenery. The possibility of combining a private game drive, a visit to the Top of Murchison Falls, a Nile boat cruise and an intimate safari lodge naturally makes the area attractive to couples.

However, it is important to distinguish the history of the name from the actual function of the track.

The Honeymoon Track is a game-drive route, not a honeymoon-only attraction. Couples do not receive exclusive access simply because they are on honeymoon, and the track is not designed as a romantic walking trail. Wildlife enthusiasts, families, photographers, repeat visitors and first-time safari travellers can all explore the route as part of a Murchison Falls safari. Its name simply adds an interesting layer of history to the experience.

The History and Reopening of the Honeymoon Track

The southern sector of Murchison Falls has not always enjoyed the same level of tourism activity as the northern side.

For many years, the majority of game drives and visitor activities were concentrated in the northern sector. This meant that large areas of the southern side received comparatively little tourist traffic, even though they formed part of the same enormous protected ecosystem.

The old Honeymoon Track eventually deteriorated and was neglected for more than 20 years. On 24 October 2015, the route was officially reopened after rehabilitation. The reopening was attended by Uganda Wildlife Authority officials and representatives of tourism facilities operating in and around the southern sector. Contemporary reporting at the time described the initiative as part of an effort to expand tourism activity beyond the heavily used northern portion of the park. The reopening was significant because game-drive infrastructure does more than simply provide tourists with roads.

A properly managed track allows visitors to access wildlife habitats while also helping park authorities manage vehicle movement and tourism pressure. By opening additional routes, visitor activity can be distributed more widely instead of being concentrated in a small number of heavily used areas.

The development of the southern game-viewing network also coincided with efforts to increase wildlife presence in the area. In 2016, giraffes were translocated from the northern sector to the southern side. The introduction of these giraffes helped create another reason for travellers to explore the southern routes.

The story of the Honeymoon Track is therefore not only a romantic story. It is also part of the continuing development and conservation history of Murchison Falls National Park.

What Makes the Honeymoon Track Different?

The main attraction of the Honeymoon Track is not that it guarantees more wildlife than every other route in Murchison Falls. Instead, its strength lies in the different environment through which it passes.

The northern game-drive circuits are famous for their broad savannah landscapes. In some areas, the vegetation is relatively open, allowing a guide and visitors to scan long distances for elephants, giraffes, buffaloes, Uganda kob, hartebeest and predators. These open landscapes create the classic East African safari experience that many first-time visitors imagine when planning a Uganda safari.

The southern side has a more enclosed character. Woodland, bush and undulating terrain mean that visibility can change quickly. A vehicle may pass through thicker vegetation before suddenly emerging into an open clearing where antelopes are grazing. A giraffe may appear above the trees, or elephants may be encountered moving between patches of woodland. This makes the Honeymoon Track more exploratory in character.

Wildlife viewing here can require patience because animals are not always as easy to spot as they can be on open northern plains. At the same time, the quieter atmosphere can be one of its greatest attractions. UWA describes the Heart of Murchison as an area where newly opened vehicle tracks have provided access to savannah supporting substantial Uganda kob populations and a developing reputation for lion sightings.

For travellers who want to experience a different side of Murchison Falls, that change of atmosphere can be just as important as the number of animals seen.

Wildlife You Can See Along the Honeymoon Track

The Honeymoon Track passes through habitats capable of supporting a variety of mammals, from large herbivores to smaller antelope species and predators.  Among the wildlife associated with the southern game-viewing area are Uganda kob, Jackson’s hartebeest, waterbuck, bushbuck, oribi, warthogs, buffaloes, elephants and giraffes. Lions may also be encountered, particularly in areas where suitable prey such as Uganda kob are present.

Wildlife sightings naturally vary from one day to another. Animals move according to food availability, water, temperature, breeding behaviour, disturbance and other environmental factors. A route that produces excellent sightings one morning may feel much quieter the following day. This is why a safari should not be approached as a checklist.

Experienced guides look for tracks, fresh dung, feeding activity, alarm calls and other clues that can reveal what has recently passed through an area. They also understand how animals use different habitats at different times of the day. The ability to interpret these signs is particularly valuable on a route such as the Honeymoon Track, where vegetation can make wildlife less obvious than on open savannah.

Giraffes on the Southern Side of Murchison Falls

The presence of giraffes is one of the most interesting developments associated with the southern game-viewing area. Giraffes were historically much more strongly associated with the northern side of Murchison Falls. In January 2016, giraffes were translocated to the southern sector as part of wildlife-management efforts. Their establishment in the southern landscape created another important attraction for game drives in the area. Today, giraffes can be encountered around the southern game tracks, although sightings can never be guaranteed.

For photographers, a giraffe encounter can be particularly rewarding. The animal’s height allows it to stand prominently above the surrounding vegetation, creating opportunities for both close wildlife portraits and wider landscape photographs. Early morning and late afternoon can produce especially attractive light. When the sun is low, the golden tones of the grass and woodland can complement the giraffe’s patterned coat, creating photographs that capture not just the animal but also the character of southern Murchison Falls.

Lions and Other Predators

Lions are among the predators that make the Honeymoon Track and the wider southern sector interesting for wildlife enthusiasts. The relationship between prey and predator is an important part of understanding why certain areas become productive wildlife-viewing zones. However, travellers should be careful with claims that lions are “guaranteed” on the Honeymoon Track.

Lions are free-ranging wild animals, and their movements change constantly. A guide may know that lions have recently been seen in a particular area, but that does not mean they will still be there when your vehicle arrives. This uncertainty is part of what makes a safari exciting. You might spend time looking across an apparently empty clearing and then discover a lion resting under a tree. Alternatively, you might see the signs of recent predator activity without encountering the animal itself. A knowledgeable guide can make the difference by understanding the behaviour of both predators and prey.

Elephants, Buffaloes and Antelopes

Large herbivores are among the most reliable sources of wildlife encounters throughout Murchison Falls National Park, and the southern sector is no exception. Elephants can move through woodland and open areas in search of food and water. Seeing a family group moving quietly through the bush is often very different from watching elephants gathered around the Nile.

Honeymoon track in Murchison

Buffaloes can also be encountered in the southern sector, particularly where suitable grazing is available. A large buffalo herd moving across an open area can be an impressive sight, but visitors should always remember that these are powerful wild animals and should never be approached outside the vehicle without appropriate authorization and professional guidance.

The smaller and medium-sized antelopes are equally important. Uganda kob and Jackson’s hartebeest are particularly significant to the ecosystem. They provide prey for predators while also adding variety to the game-viewing experience. Waterbuck, bushbuck and oribi may also be encountered depending on habitat and conditions.

Birdwatching Along the Honeymoon Track

Although the Honeymoon Track is primarily known as a game-drive route, birdwatchers should not overlook it. Murchison Falls National Park contains a wide range of habitats, including woodland, savannah, riverine environments and wetland areas. These habitats support a substantial bird population, making birdwatching a natural complement to a wildlife safari.

The southern sector’s woodland and bush habitats create opportunities to observe species that may be difficult to spot in more open landscapes. A guide who understands bird calls and habitat preferences can help identify birds that would otherwise pass unnoticed. Visitors should carry binoculars if birdwatching is an important part of their safari.

The experience is also slower than conventional big-game viewing. Instead of simply looking for large mammals, birdwatchers need to pay attention to movement in trees, calls, flight patterns and small flashes of colour among the vegetation. For photographers, this creates another opportunity to experience the Honeymoon Track differently.

The Heart of Murchison

The term Heart of Murchison is used to describe an important wildlife-viewing area in the central and southern part of Murchison Falls National Park. UWA’s visitor information places the Heart of Murchison about 20 kilometres east of the Masindi–Paraa road and describes it as a tract of savannah surrounded by more extensive bush and forest. The area has become increasingly significant for wildlife viewing because of its Uganda kob population and the presence of lions.

The Heart of Murchison is important when discussing the Honeymoon Track because the two are part of the broader story of tourism development in the southern sector. This is a part of Murchison that many visitors never explore.

Most first-time safari itineraries naturally focus on the famous attractions: the northern game drives, the Nile boat cruise and the Top of Murchison Falls. Those experiences remain essential, but the southern game tracks reveal another side of the park. The landscape feels less like a busy wildlife-viewing circuit and more like an exploration of the park’s interior.

Honeymoon Track vs Buligi Game Track

Travellers planning a Murchison Falls safari often ask whether the Honeymoon Track is better than the Buligi Game Track. There is no universal answer because the two routes offer different environments and serve different purposes.

Buligi is one of the park’s most established and popular game-viewing areas. Located on the northern side of the Nile, it passes through open savannah and woodland and is well known for opportunities to see elephants, giraffes, buffaloes, Uganda kob, hartebeest and predators. The Honeymoon Track, by comparison, is located on the southern side and passes through a more wooded and undulating environment.

For a first-time visitor with only a limited amount of time, the northern circuits may provide a more concentrated classic game-drive experience. UWA’s own visitor material highlights the northern game-track network and describes the Heart of Murchison as a different type of wildlife-viewing environment. But travellers do not necessarily have to choose one or the other. If your itinerary allows enough time, experiencing both sides of the park can make the safari more diverse.

Honeymoon Track vs Victoria and Albert Game Tracks

The Victoria and Albert game tracks form part of the northern game-viewing network and offer different habitats around the Nile and Lake Albert system. The Victoria track is particularly interesting for wildlife and birdwatching, while the Albert side provides access to other habitats and wildlife areas. The Honeymoon Track is geographically different because it lies south of the Victoria Nile. This matters when planning your itinerary.

A visitor staying on the southern side may find the Honeymoon Track convenient because it can be explored without repeatedly crossing the river. A visitor staying on the northern side may need to consider the logistics of crossing the Nile if they want to include southern-sector activities. This is one reason why the location of your lodge should be considered when designing a Murchison Falls itinerary. The cheapest or most luxurious lodge is not automatically the most convenient for every activity.

Why the Southern Sector Is Important for Murchison Falls Safaris

The southern sector is important because it broadens the tourism experience within Murchison Falls National Park. Historically, the majority of visitor activity was concentrated in a relatively small part of the park. Reopening tracks such as the Honeymoon route helped encourage visitors to explore additional areas. This has practical tourism benefits because it allows activities to be distributed across a wider landscape. It also gives repeat visitors a reason to explore Murchison Falls again.

A traveller who has already completed a northern game drive may find the southern landscape particularly interesting because it provides a different visual and ecological experience. Rather than sending every client through exactly the same route, an itinerary can be adapted according to the traveller’s interests, accommodation and available time.

What is the Best Time to Visit the Honeymoon Track?

The Honeymoon Track can be visited throughout the year, but seasonal conditions influence both the landscape and wildlife-viewing experience. The drier periods are generally popular for game viewing because vegetation can become less dense, roads are usually easier to navigate and animals may gather around dependable water sources. For travellers whose priority is maximizing opportunities to see large mammals, these conditions can be attractive. The landscape during the dry season can also be more open, making it easier to scan for animals.

However, the dry season is not the only time worth visiting. During the wet seasons, Murchison Falls becomes greener and more vibrant. Vegetation grows rapidly, bird activity can increase and the landscape takes on a completely different appearance. For photographers, the wet season can be particularly rewarding because of green scenery, dramatic clouds and excellent light.

The trade-off is that thicker vegetation can make some animals more difficult to locate, while heavy rainfall can affect road conditions. For this reason, the best time for your Honeymoon Track experience depends partly on what you want from your safari.

Best Time of Day for a Honeymoon Track Game Drive

Early morning is generally one of the most rewarding periods for wildlife viewing. Temperatures are cooler, light is softer and many animals are active after the night. A morning departure also gives the guide more time to explore the area before the day’s heat becomes intense. This is particularly useful when searching for predators or animals that become less active during the hottest part of the day. Afternoon game drives provide a different experience.

As temperatures begin to fall, some animals become active again. The light also becomes warmer, making the late afternoon particularly attractive for photography. For honeymooners, a late-afternoon drive can be especially enjoyable because it can be combined with a relaxed evening at the lodge.

There is no single perfect time for every traveller. The best approach is to build the game drive around the wider itinerary rather than treating it as an isolated activity.

How to Access the Honeymoon Track

Access to the Honeymoon Track depends on where you are staying and which activities you are combining. Travellers approaching Murchison Falls from Kampala commonly travel through the Masindi area before continuing towards the park. From the southern side, the road network provides access toward the Top of the Falls and other attractions. The exact route used by your safari vehicle will depend on your lodge, the day’s programme and the condition of the roads.

This is important because Murchison Falls is enormous. A map can make the park look straightforward, but distances inside the conservation area can be considerable. A professional safari operator will normally plan the day’s activities geographically so that you do not spend unnecessary hours driving back and forth between attractions.

For example, a traveller staying near the southern side can potentially combine a southern game drive with the Top of Murchison Falls, while a traveller planning a northern game drive and Nile launch cruise needs to consider the river crossing and timing. Good itinerary planning can therefore save time while giving you more time for the actual safari.

Where to Stay for the Honeymoon Track

Accommodation should be considered carefully when planning a Honeymoon Track experience.  Travellers staying in the southern part of Murchison Falls may find it convenient to combine the Honeymoon Track with the Top of the Falls and other southern attractions. Sambiya River Lodge is particularly associated with this part of the park and is frequently mentioned in connection with the southern game-drive network.

There are also accommodation options on other sides of the park, and the right choice depends on whether you prioritize luxury, location, wildlife viewing, river views, honeymoon atmosphere or budget. For couples, accommodation can be an important part of the experience.

A honeymoon safari is not only about the game drives. After several hours in a safari vehicle, returning to a comfortable lodge, enjoying a good meal and having time to relax can make the overall journey considerably more enjoyable. When Native Africa Tours designs a private Murchison Falls safari, accommodation can therefore be selected together with the game-drive plan rather than as a separate decision.

Is the Honeymoon Track Good for a Honeymoon Safari?

The Honeymoon Track can be a memorable component of a Uganda honeymoon safari, particularly for couples who prefer a private and less conventional experience. The route itself is not a romantic attraction in the traditional sense. There are no honeymoon decorations, special restaurants or couples-only facilities on the track.  Its appeal comes from the experience of being together in a quieter wilderness environment.

Imagine leaving your lodge early in the morning and driving through woodland as the sun rises. The landscape gradually opens, birds begin calling and wildlife becomes active. You may encounter Uganda kob in a clearing, giraffes browsing above the trees or elephants moving across the road. Later, you can visit the Top of Murchison Falls and watch the Nile squeeze through its narrow gorge before continuing downstream.

In the evening, you return to your lodge for dinner and relaxation. That combination of wildlife, scenery, adventure and private time is what makes Murchison Falls such an interesting honeymoon destination.

Combining the Honeymoon Track With the Top of Murchison Falls

The Top of Murchison Falls is one of the most dramatic attractions in Uganda and fits naturally into a southern-sector itinerary. At the falls, the Victoria Nile is forced through a narrow gorge before plunging downstream. The concentration of water creates an extraordinary display of power, noise and spray. The experience from the top is very different from viewing the falls from the boat below.

When combined with the Honeymoon Track, the two attractions can create a particularly varied day. You can spend the morning searching for wildlife before changing the focus from animals to landscape and water at the falls. For photographers, this also provides opportunities to photograph two completely different sides of Murchison Falls in the same day. One moment you may be photographing a giraffe in woodland. A few hours later you may be standing beside the Nile watching millions of litres of water force their way through the gorge.

Combining the Honeymoon Track With a Nile Boat Cruise

The Nile boat cruise in Murchison Falls National Park is another activity that pairs naturally with a game drive. From the boat, the experience changes completely. Instead of travelling across savannah in a safari vehicle, you move along the Nile while watching hippos, crocodiles, elephants, buffaloes and birds along the riverbanks. The launch trip towards the base of Murchison Falls is one of the park’s signature experiences.

Honeymoon track in Murchison

For honeymoon couples, a private boat arrangement can provide a more intimate experience where available, although the exact arrangements and operating conditions should always be confirmed when booking. Combining a game drive with a boat cruise is particularly worthwhile because the two activities reveal different aspects of the ecosystem. The game drive shows you the land. The boat cruise shows you the river. Together, they provide a much fuller picture of Murchison Falls.

Honeymoon Track for Wildlife Photographers

The Honeymoon Track has considerable potential for wildlife photography because of the combination of open and wooded habitats. A photographer may be able to capture giraffes against the sky, antelopes in open grassland, elephants moving through woodland or birds perched among the trees. The route also offers opportunities for environmental photography.

Instead of photographing an animal tightly framed in the centre of the image, consider including the surrounding landscape. This can communicate the character of southern Murchison Falls much more effectively. Early morning and late afternoon are particularly attractive because the light is softer and warmer. A good safari guide can also help by positioning the vehicle appropriately while maintaining a respectful distance from wildlife. The goal should always be to photograph animals without changing their behaviour.

Honeymoon Track for Repeat Visitors to Murchison Falls

The Honeymoon Track is especially relevant to travellers returning to Murchison Falls. First-time visitors naturally want to experience the park’s most famous attractions. For many, this means a northern game drive, a Nile cruise and the Top of Murchison Falls. Once those experiences have been completed, the southern sector provides an opportunity to explore something different. The landscape is different. The road network is different. The wildlife-viewing experience can be different. And the atmosphere can feel quieter.

This makes the Honeymoon Track a useful addition to a second Murchison Falls safari, particularly for photographers, birdwatchers and travellers who enjoy exploring less prominent parts of a destination.

Is the Honeymoon Track a Hidden Gem?

The term “hidden gem” is popular in travel marketing, but it should be used carefully. The Honeymoon Track is certainly less famous than the Buligi game tracks, and many international visitors may not know about it before arriving in Uganda. However, it is not an undiscovered wilderness route. It is an established game-drive track within a national park managed for conservation and tourism. Its real appeal is that it gives visitors access to a quieter and less prominent section of Murchison Falls.

That is a stronger and more credible reason to visit than promising an untouched wilderness experience. Visitors should also understand that fewer vehicles do not necessarily mean more wildlife.  In fact, the northern sector can provide more concentrated game viewing in certain areas. The advantage of the Honeymoon Track is the opportunity to experience another part of the ecosystem.

Is the Honeymoon Track Suitable for Families?

Yes. Despite its romantic name, the Honeymoon Track is suitable for families as well as couples. Children interested in wildlife can enjoy looking for giraffes, elephants, buffaloes, antelopes and birds. The main consideration is patience. A safari is not a zoo. Animals are not placed beside the road at predictable intervals, and there may be periods when the vehicle travels without encountering major wildlife.

Parents travelling with young children should therefore discuss the pace of the safari with their operator before departure. A private safari vehicle provides greater flexibility because the guide can adapt the timing to the family’s needs. Breaks, meal times and game-drive duration can be planned more comfortably than on a fixed group itinerary.

Safety on the Honeymoon Track

A game drive through the Honeymoon Track is generally a controlled tourism activity, but visitors are still entering a wild environment. The most important rule is simple: follow the instructions of your guide and park authorities at all times. Visitors should remain inside the vehicle unless the guide has identified an authorized and safe location for getting out. Wild animals should never be approached, fed or provoked. Do not attempt to get close to an elephant, buffalo, lion or other animal simply to take a better photograph. Maintaining an appropriate distance is important for both visitor safety and wildlife welfare. Drivers should also remain on designated tracks and follow park regulations. Off-track driving can damage vegetation, disturb wildlife and contribute to erosion. Responsible tourism is therefore an essential part of enjoying the Honeymoon Track.

What to Pack for a Honeymoon Track Game Drive

You do not need specialized equipment to enjoy the Honeymoon Track, but a few practical items can make the experience more comfortable. A pair of binoculars is one of the most useful things to carry because some wildlife may be at a distance or partially hidden in vegetation. A camera with a zoom lens is useful for photographers, while a smartphone is perfectly adequate for casual photography.

Because safari vehicles can be exposed to strong sunlight, carry sunglasses, sunscreen and a hat. Lightweight, comfortable clothing is usually appropriate, with a light jacket useful for early morning drives when temperatures can be cooler. Water is essential, especially on longer game drives. Insect repellent can also be useful depending on the season and location. If you plan to take many photographs or video clips, carry spare batteries or a power bank.

Can You Visit the Honeymoon Track and Murchison Falls in One Day?

Yes. The Honeymoon Track can be incorporated into a day that also includes other Murchison Falls attractions, although the exact schedule should be planned around your lodge location and the activities you want to include. A couple staying in the southern part of the park, for example, could start with an early morning game drive, return to the lodge for breakfast or brunch, and later visit the Top of Murchison Falls. Another option is to combine a game drive with a Nile cruise, depending on the operating schedule of the boat and the location of the lodge. The important thing is not to overload the day.

Murchison Falls is a large park, and trying to fit too many activities into one day can turn a relaxing safari into a long sequence of vehicle transfers. A good itinerary leaves room for wildlife sightings, photography, meals and rest.

Sample One-Day Honeymoon Track Itinerary

A couple staying in the southern sector could structure a day around the Honeymoon Track as follows.

Early morning: Begin with an early breakfast or a light pre-drive meal before departing for the game drive. The morning hours provide cooler temperatures and good opportunities for wildlife activity.

Morning: Explore the Honeymoon Track and associated southern game-viewing routes. The guide can adjust the route according to wildlife activity and road conditions while looking for giraffes, Uganda kob, hartebeest, elephants, buffaloes and other wildlife.

Late morning: Return to the lodge for breakfast, brunch or relaxation.

Afternoon: Visit the Top of Murchison Falls and spend time at the viewpoints overlooking the Nile.

Evening: Return to the lodge for dinner and relaxation.

For a honeymoon, this pace is often preferable to trying to fill every hour with activities.

Honeymoon Track on a 3-Day Murchison Falls Safari

The Honeymoon Track can also be incorporated into a short Murchison Falls safari. A three-day itinerary could begin with travel from Kampala or Entebbe to Murchison Falls National Park on the first day. Depending on arrival time, you can settle into your lodge and enjoy an afternoon activity.

The second day can focus on the classic Murchison Falls experience, with an early morning game drive followed by a Nile boat cruise and a visit to the falls. The third day can then be used for the Honeymoon Track or another southern game drive before beginning the journey back to Kampala or Entebbe. This arrangement gives travellers an opportunity to experience both the more established northern wildlife circuits and the quieter southern landscape.

Honeymoon Track on a 4-Day Uganda Honeymoon Safari

With four days, the itinerary can be more relaxed.

  • <strong>Day 1: Travel from Kampala or Entebbe to Murchison Falls National Park.
  • Day 2: Morning game drive and Nile boat cruise.
  • Day 3: Honeymoon Track, Heart of Murchison and Top of the Falls.
  • Day 4: Relaxed morning followed by departure from Murchison Falls.

The additional day is valuable because it reduces pressure on the itinerary.

Instead of rushing from one attraction to another, couples can enjoy their lodge, spend longer watching wildlife and have time for photography and relaxation.

Combining Murchison Falls With Other Uganda Destinations

One of the strengths of Uganda as a safari destination is the ability to combine several different ecosystems in one journey.

Murchison Falls can be combined with Kibale Forest National Park for chimpanzee tracking, Queen Elizabeth National Park for classic savannah wildlife, and Bwindi Impenetrable National Park for gorilla trekking. Couples interested in a longer honeymoon can therefore create a journey that combines wildlife, primates, forests, lakes and cultural experiences.

For example, a two-week Uganda honeymoon could begin with Murchison Falls, continue to Kibale for chimpanzee tracking, proceed to Queen Elizabeth for game drives and a boat cruise on the Kazinga Channel, and finish in Bwindi for gorilla trekking before relaxing around Lake Bunyonyi. The Honeymoon Track then becomes one chapter within a much larger Uganda adventure.

Responsible Tourism on the Honeymoon Track

Responsible tourism is important wherever wildlife and tourism interact. The Honeymoon Track exists within a protected ecosystem, and visitors have a responsibility to help protect it. Stay on designated tracks and avoid unnecessary off-road driving. Do not litter. Keep noise levels low around wildlife. Never feed animals or attempt to attract them towards the vehicle. Photography should also be undertaken responsibly. A photograph is not worth causing an animal stress or altering its natural behaviour.

Following the instructions of your guide and Uganda Wildlife Authority personnel is one of the simplest ways to contribute to responsible tourism. The goal of a safari is to observe wildlife while allowing it to continue behaving naturally. That principle helps ensure that future generations of travellers can experience the same wilderness.

Frequently Asked Questions About the Honeymoon Track

What is the Honeymoon Track in Murchison Falls National Park?

The Honeymoon Track is a game-drive route in the southern sector of Murchison Falls National Park. It passes through woodland, bushland and savannah habitats and provides opportunities to see wildlife including giraffes, elephants, buffaloes, Uganda kob, Jackson’s hartebeest, waterbuck and other antelopes. Lions can also occur in the area.

Why is it called the Honeymoon Track?

The route is associated with a story about a couple who reportedly spent a night in the area in the 1950s. The story eventually gave the route its romantic name.

Yes. A game drive and Nile boat cruise complement one another because they provide two very different ways to experience the Murchison Falls ecosystem.

Is the Honeymoon Track suitable for a honeymoon?

Yes. While the track itself is a normal wildlife route, it can form part of a romantic Uganda honeymoon safari when combined with private game drives, comfortable accommodation, the Nile boat cruise, the Top of Murchison Falls and other experiences.

Final Thoughts on the Honeymoon Track in Murchison Falls National Park

The Honeymoon Track in Murchison Falls National Park offers travellers an opportunity to explore a side of Uganda’s largest national park that is often overlooked.

Its unusual name naturally attracts attention, but the real value of the route lies beyond the story. The Honeymoon Track is part of the development of wildlife tourism in the southern sector, an area that historically received considerably less visitor activity than the famous northern game-drive circuits.

Its reopening in 2015 helped create greater access to the southern landscape, while the subsequent introduction of giraffes added another important wildlife attraction. Today, visitors exploring the route can encounter Uganda kob, Jackson’s hartebeest, buffaloes, elephants, waterbuck, bushbuck, giraffes and other wildlife, with opportunities to encounter lions in the wider southern sector. The experience is different from driving through the open savannah of Buligi.

Here, woodland and bush can make wildlife more challenging to find, but they also create a feeling of exploration. The road moves through changing habitats, and sightings can feel spontaneous. A giraffe can emerge above the trees, elephants can cross the track, or a herd of Uganda kob can suddenly appear in an open clearing.

For honeymooners, the route has an additional appeal because it can be incorporated into a wider romantic itinerary. A private game drive can be combined with the Top of Murchison Falls, a Nile boat cruise, comfortable accommodation and time to relax together in the wilderness.

Suitable for Returning Visitors too

For repeat visitors, photographers and travellers interested in exploring beyond the most famous Murchison Falls circuits, the southern sector provides another reason to spend more time in the park. Most importantly, the Honeymoon Track should not be marketed as a place where wildlife is guaranteed or where every safari produces the same experience. That uncertainty is part of the beauty of an African safari.

The animals are wild. The landscape changes with the seasons. Weather affects the roads. Wildlife moves from one habitat to another. Some days may produce spectacular sightings, while others may be quieter. An experienced guide, good timing and a well-planned itinerary can greatly improve the experience, but the wilderness always retains the final word. That is precisely what makes exploring the Honeymoon Track special.
