About Bwindi Impenetrable National Park

Located in the southwestern region of Uganda, Bwindi Impenetrable National Park is one of the best and most incredible gorilla destinations in the world.

Bwindi Impenetrable National Park was recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1994. Bwindi Impenetrable National Park occupies a land size of 321 square kilometers. The park neighbors the Democratic Republic of Congo and Rwanda in the East. 

Bwindi Impenetrable National Park lies in the districts of Kanungu, Kabale, Rubanda, and Kisoro in southwestern Uganda. The park has over 459 mountain gorilla individuals which amounts to close to half of the remaining mountain gorilla population in the world.

Bwindi Impenetrable National Park is part of the Virunga conservation area that stretches from the Virunga National Park of the Democratic Republic of Congo through the Volcanoes National Park of Rwanda. With these many individual mountain gorillas, the park has over 50 gorilla families. Among these families, there are only 24 habituated families that are available for trekking.

The Batwa cultural encounter exposes visitors to the traditional ways of these beautiful people. The Batwa people dwelled in Bwindi before it was gazetted into a national park and were referred to as the, “keepers of the Forest”.

Visitors on Batwa Cultural experiences get to learn the jungle ways of survival, such as hunting using unique traditional techniques and weapons and fruit picking. The Batwa elders’ tale of ancient legends and traditional songs will leave you amazed.

Hiking

Birding

Bwindi Impenetrable National Park is home to over 350 bird species with 90% of Uganda’s Albertine rift endemic birds. Among the Albertine bird species,  14 species have not been spotted anywhere else in Uganda.

Bwindi has different Birding trails in the park designed to help birders spot the different species around the park. Birding mainly occurs along the major trail of the Buhoma waterfall trail, bamboo zone and Mubwindi swamp in Ruhija Sector.
